The Race Is On

Picture me, on Friday, innocently reading blogs and leaving comments. You know, like I do every day. So, I’m reading and reading and I come to the latest post at Seed Stitch. And Cheryl, like Julia and Beth, is all excited about the release of Anne’s Wing of the Moth pattern. Cheryl says she wants to knit this pattern as a race to see who can finish it first. I, again innocently, leave a comment about how I’m planning on knitting this shawl but I need to finish Miriam’s Adamas shawl first. Count me in for the knitting but not for the race, says I. And do you know what she did? Here’s a hint.

Yup. She threw down the gauntlet. She called me out. Here’s what she said, exactly:

Oh no, you’re not getting out of this that easily! You’re in, consider yourself raced.

Ahem. I am not one to back down from a challenge. Then again, I have my rules. And one of my rules is only one lace project on the needles at a time. The race is on but the race is to finish Adamas before I start Wing of the Moth. Here’s Adamas in her current state.

I have 5 more repeats of the main pattern before I switch to the edging. How long do you think this is going to take me to finish knitting? Leave your guess in the comments by Friday, August 25, 2006 at 11:00 pm EST and you’lll be entered into a drawing for this skein of lace weight yarn – so you can make your very own Wing of the Moth Shawl.

Merino Lace, made in Italy for Skacel Collection. 1375 yds.

You don’t have to be right about when I’ll finish to win. Anyone who guesses in the comments will be entered and I’ll randomly select a name. This is an excellent chance to de-lurk, all you lurkers. Just sayin.

The race (and the contest!) is on!

  1. Looks amazing! Your such a fast knitter I’d in in the next day or so you’ll be done!

    Enjoy! Good Luck!
A beautiful skein too Love the purple!

  2. I’m going to guess that you’ll finish BEFORE your 8/25 entry deadline…I’m thinking you finish by Friday at 10pm.

And hoo-boy, this is going to be fun to watch.

  3. Ok, delurking here to guess that you’ll finish the Adamas shawl on Saturday afternoon. I think the Wings of the Moth shawl is gorgeous, but don’t have enough lace weight in my stash to get going on one right yet. And then there is the whole time issue…

  4. Delurking… I think you’ll finish Adamas on Sunday at 12:01 am. (Lace has a way of making me stay up late to finish!)

  5. I’m completely going to enjoy watching you Moth racers!

I think you’ll knit day and night and every stolen moment in between and become a Moth racer Saturday morning, bleary-eyed from staying awake so long finishing Adamas.

  6. If I were you, I’d love to start a new lace project on Labour Day … so my guess is you’d finish by August 31.

  7. I’m going to say- Saturday, August 26, 2006 @ 1pm. It’s my wedding anniversary- a blessed day!

  8. I’m going to guess Friday, approximately one day for each repeat, plus a day for the edging. Then minus one day, because I think you’ll pour on the juice at the end!

  9. i think you will finish by wednesday morning, 2am.
carole, i won cherry tree hill yarn in claudia’s MS bike ride prize patrol that i think you might have sent me! could that be right? if so, it is a small world indeed

  10. I too would like to make a wing of the moth shawl, but I think I’m better off starting with something less complex.

Oh .. the contest. Umm … How about August 30th, at noon. 🙂

  11. Yikes! Are you sure you’re feeling all right? Not delusional or anything? Wing of the Moth sure looks pretty but arggh, the ripping I would do if I were under a deadline because of all the mistakes I’d make.
My guess for Adamas: August 31st, 8 pm. (You’ll probably finish way before then; I’m projecting since I’m such a slow lace knitter.)

  12. Funny how the gauntlet is thrown at you, so you throw it back at us lurkers! But anything for some laceweight…drool…

    I think you’ll finish this Wednesday (8/23) at 8:07am.

  13. OK, you called me out. I’m delurking to say I think you fill finish your shawl by Sunday evening, oh, about 9pm. Hmmm. Yep, that’s it!

  14. Very cool that you’re not backing down from the challenge–you GO, girl!

I think you’ll finish up this week–by Saturday!

  15. I just this evening bought the moth pattern myself!!! Like I need another project…huh!! Well my guess is that you’ll finish by next Saturday at 9:05pm and you will toast your final row with a Martini…

  16. I will hazard a guess that you will stay up quite late Saturday night, since I can see you are both pressured and committed; Sunday, August 27th around 1 AM is my guess.

  17. I am finally de-lurking after all these months at your request. I absolutely love the shawl and I think you can finish it in record time. Today is monday, so I say Friday by midnight.

  18. I’m going to give you a little more time than the others…Let’s say Monday, August 28.

  19. I enjoy your blog and can’t wait to see both finished shawls. My guess is Sun. 1 AM (late Saturday night). Great quilts, too!
