Christmas Knitting

If you’ve been around this blog for a while you’ll know that I don’t knit for Christmas. I used to, but then I smartened up. I gifted too many things that went unappreciated and my knitting time is way too precious to knit for people who don’t “get” what it means to receive something hand knit. So, I save my hand knits for birthdays. And only for the birthdays of those who get it.

The nice thing about this is that when Christmas rolls around, I’m the one who winds up with new socks.

  1. Very cheery socks! They almost look like knee socks, but it’s probably a photo illusion. 18 pairs this year? *thud*

  2. I also don’t do Christmas knitting and for all the reasons you state. However, you seem to stay calm about the entire matter just stating your case, I on the other hand become hostile and shrill. When asked, I am going to channel your words! Great socks – you deserve them!

  3. LOVE the socks! Those are absolutely adorable & the perfect present! I can’t believe you’ve made 18 pairs of socks this year .. WOW!

  4. Oh nice socks!! (And cute shoes too!) I can’t believe you’ve knit 18 pair of socks. That is so impressive.
I think you’ve got a great plan there for knitting gifts. I knit something for my mother for Christmas and no one else.

  5. I LOVE those socks!!! You are a smart woman. I very rarely knit for other people for the same reasons you mention. 2 of my kids love and will live in my handknits (and they get them) and the other 3 scoff because they are not from Abercrombe or the like.

18 pairs, girl I am very impressed! That magic loop is getting pulled out again for sure here!

  6. Very wise. I’m with you! and the socks are definitely a good treat for someone who would appreciate them. Like, say, YOU!

  7. Love those socks! You’ve got me beat by several on socks!
I’m with you on knitting only for those who appreciate it…only thing is almost everyone in my family appreciates it!
During those *lean years* the only way I could give gifts was to make them, later I tried to “buy” gifts and everyone was a little upset they didn’t get the homemade item!
This year is the “Sock Christmas”…I hope they like them!

  8. Very nice. I bought that book because I saw all of your versions of this sock pattern. I am hoping to try it soon. There are some other cute patterns in there as well.

  9. I LOVE yer socks Lady! So neato.

I’m with you on the xmas knitting! Besides, isn’t there enough other things to stress about during the holidays besides knitting deadlines? Sure thing babe. 🙂

  10. Carole, I am with you about the Christmas knits. I generally don’t knit without a request.

Those are some excellent socks. Love me some Vesper.

  11. Happy Christmas to you, indeed. They look great!! I’m totally in awe of 18 pairs, too. How many of those were gifts and how many for you?

  12. Wow, 18 pairs of socks in a year — I’m impressed. I totally agree with you about knitting for gifts. Except for my daughter I have never given a pair of hand knitted socks for anyone – because of the reasons you stated.
Once I found some beautiful homespun yarn that screamed ‘teenager’so I bought it and knitted my 14 year-old niece a small envelope purse and matching hat and scarf for her birthday. I never received a thank you plus I learned second-hand that her mother felt I was just spending time on a hobby and passing off what I made as a birthday gift. Never again.

  13. Those socks look great. Enjoy them! This is the first year that I really did a lot of holiday knitting. I hope that I don’t regret it.

  14. Love the socks! Now there’s a yarn I haven’t tried, Vesper. Not sure how that has escaped my clutches 🙂

I’m totally with you on the knitting for others. I’ve spent too much time knitting for those who don’t appreciate it. Its far too precious to me to let that happen, so unless someone asks for something I don’t knit gifts for others (except the teacher gift).

  15. Great socks!!! I knit for very few people – actually only one person – she is a friend and she “gets it”. I do charity knitting – because I think in my mind that whoever gets a scarf that I have knit “gets” it….So far I only do scarfs!

I intend to replace all my store bought socks with my own hand knit socks!

  16. 18 pairs of socks? Wow. The things you’ve said about sock yarn in the past are starting to make more sense. I know you posted about your goal being one a month and that you beat it, but I’m slow, and it’s just starting to sink in.

Those are such great colors – fun and funky and just a great combo!

  17. VERY nice shoes/clogs that you have there, too. I totally get what you are saying about not gifting knitting to those who don’t get it about hand knitting. And your socks are very cool.

  18. Love the socks. What colorway is that? I think I have a skein of whatever it is.

I completely get what you’re saying about gift knitting. My new rule … no thank you note, No More Handknits For You.

  19. 18 pairs! That’s three socks per month! Impressive. And I know some of them must have been man-socks, too, which is more impressive still.

Think you can beat that next year?… 😉

  20. 18 pair?! Wow! Those are fabulous. I just received my Christmas sock yarn – not in time to knit holiday socks. Perhaps a good summer project.

  21. Yes! I smartened up a little bit when lovely but clueless MIL washed and felted a scarf. After the cat peed on it. I still do it, but only for those who I think “get it”.

  22. 42 comments! Coooooool!! I haven’t read them but I bet 42 people said Great socks – but where’d ya get those SHOES!? Love the shoes! 🙂

  23. lovely new socks Carole. 18 pairs – wow. that’s alot… and that doesn’t even include all the scarves, shawls etc. that you also made. rock on girlfriend.

  24. those are great carole! i love to knit for christmas, even when i get tired. i’m teaching the little ones in the family to love and appreciate all the handmade gifts, the way my gram and mom taught us to do!
