Mad Weave Socks

I finished the Mad Weave Socks from Sock Madness Round Four. I may be out of the competition but I’m still taking advantage of the wonderful patterns for each round. And speaking of these wonderful patterns, several of you have asked about obtaining them for your own selves. You can get pattern one here, pattern two here and pattern three here. I will keep you informed as other patterns become available, I promise.

Without further ado, here are my finished Mad Weave Socks. I love them! I modified the pattern slightly – I can do that now that I’m not an official competitor – and just did ribbing on the sides of the leg and foot rather than a long line of cabley type twists. I really thought that took away from the woven stitch detail, plus it was a PITA. I also did my standard heel flap rather than the eye of partridge heel the pattern suggests.

The yarn is Piece of Vermont knit on size 1 Addi Turbos. Jessie’s colors are wonderful. They are subtle and varied and they blend together beautifully. Sometimes these look gray and sometimes blue and mostly lavendar but always yummy.

I’m skipping the Round 5 pattern as I’m not that crazy about it but Round 6 will be released on Friday and I’m hoping it will be something fun.

What am I saying? It’s sock knitting. Of course it will be fun.

  1. They look terrific. And thanks for the link to the patterns — I’m going to check them out. You are cranking out the socks!

  2. And leave it to you to have beautiful flowers blooming that just so happen to match your new socks! They are really nice!

  3. Thanks for linking to the patterns … I’ve admired them all, but have to say that this pair are my favorite. It’s probably because what you have here is a great marriage of yarn and pattern … nice job.

  4. Beautiful socks! I would have done the cable, though. (Of course I would. You can’t have too many cables, I always say.) Your phlox is looking lovely.

  5. I love the Mad Weave socks! Really a perfect combination of pattern and yarn. Thanks for the links to the available patterns!

  6. I know I’ve said this before, but those socks merit saying it again: I love the yarn colors and I love the pattern. I think your modification to keep the ribbing simple was a good one — the weave really does stand out! Great pair of socks.

  7. Your Mad Weaves came out great! I had planned on knitting the patterns as they came out after being eliminated, but haven’t yet done one. I’m with you on pattern 5; it’s just not for me.

  8. Thanks for the pattern links – I still can’t get over what a fun idea sockmadness is.

I’ve also really been enjoying your Reenactment Roundup – does Dale keep his beard all year round or grow it special?

  9. I love the pattern and the color. Your alteration was the perfect contrast, not too drastic. I’ll watch for that pattern.

  10. Those are beautiful! That’s one dashing pair of socks, and Jessie’s subtle colorway really lets the pattern stand out.

  11. Of all of the Sock Madness patterns that have been shown so far, the Mad Weave is my absolute favorite. I just think it is a really neat looking sock.

  12. You might as well be a competitor still, considering how fast you’re cranking out the socks! 😉

These are so pretty–though I think the colorway has as much to do with it as the pattern does. I just love the look of the elongated loops (?) in the third picture–they really show off the gorgeous colors in that yarn. (Beware of snags, though! 😉

  13. Pretty socks — love that pattern stitch — but I ADORE spring phlox. When I was a kid on the farm my parents had fenced in part of the woods behind the house to be part of our yard. It was a wildflower garden where they made sure the native wildflowers that grew in the woods survived and thrived in our yard. The Sweet Williams that grew there had such a lovely fragrance. There were Jack-in-the pulpit, too, but I don’t recall what else.

  14. Hey! That yarn looks just like what you sent me. I really think that the pattern works well with it and I’m happy that you liked it.

  15. drop dead gorgeous socks!
and I love Jessie’s yarn too – now that she has her studio finished, I’ll bet that we see even more of her fabulous colors.

  16. Ooh, those are neat! That pattern looks great with the yarn. Was the pattern annoying to do? I agree with you on the cable twists (in my mind’s eye), the ribbing gives it a much cleaner and less busy line.

  17. You are too cute (It’s sock knitting of course it is fun!)!! I LOVE your version of the Mad Weave socks….I love the stitch pattern and color choice! Wear them well!

  18. Love the sockage!! That is one of the cooler sock patterns I’ve seen – glad to know where to get the pattern now, thanks!! ;o)

Of course, I have to finish the shawl from hell er, my latest stealth knitting project first…

  19. Oooh, I love that stitch pattern! It looks a lot like Grumperina’s shifting sands scarf, and it’s dynamite on socks I think. 🙂

  20. The socks are gorgeous Carole! And thanks for providing links to past socks so that we can all share in the fun!

  21. Lurv the socks! You had me worried when you said you were skipping a sock. I thought you were sick or something.

  22. Oh my goodness, isn’t she just beautiful. Mack was very serious about showing me a pinecone yesterday, too. Little nature-lovers!!

Okay, now I see I’m on the wrong post. It’s getting late and I’m tired, so you know that I’m talking about Ambrynn. That sock pattern IS really nice, though…

  23. Hey, great socks. I have no recollection of dyeing that yarn, but I’ll take your word for it. 🙂

  24. You are just so darn talented! Those look hard to me…but the colors remind me of our stormy sky today. Great job, Carole!

  25. You may be out of the competition, but you’re still a sock knitting machine! The latest ones are lovely. The stitch pattern is so pretty and it works so well with the yarn.
