Oops It Happened Again

I have another finished pair of socks to show you and the title refers to that teeny problem of flashing and pooling because it happened again.

I’m just not sure I like these and I considered abandoning them more than once but I didn’t because of the name of the yarn. It’s called “Beach House” by Great Adirondack and I bought it from the Loopy Ewe way back in the winter with plans to knit the socks while we were on vacation at our Beach House rental.

I started them on our first day at the beach and by the time we went home I had finished one sock. The second sock knit up quickly last week and they are done. This makes my 5th pair of socks for the Summer of Socks ’08.

And I don’t hate them but I don’t love them either. Ya know?

Oh, and many of you have recently asked about how to do a picot edge on a sock. I happily direct you to this tutorial at Claudia’s Blog. She explains it quite well and if you follow these directions you’ll have no problem with this technique.

And there we have Beach House Socks. The name is great but the socks? Meh.

  1. You can just send those socks right over here ’cause I love ’em! I think I’m just an oddball, I don’t mind the flashing and pooling a bit as long as it’s not fighting the pattern.

  2. I love the name of the yarn… and I actually like them 🙂 (despite not being a fan of pool and flash)

They look like they’ll be perfect to wear at the beach house in the fall – not too fancy, not too lacey, just perfect for a pair of jeans, sneakers and a bulky sweater – all set for a blustery stroll on the beach.

have I mentioned lately that you’re a speedy gonzales with your knitting??

  3. I see what you mean. Sometimes the pooling is a nice surprise and others – not so much. I think that it’s all the white space that’s throwing it off.

  4. They are nice though…and I’m sure they will be comfortable. I still don’t know what causes that pooling thing – but, I have a pair of socks that I knit that did the same thing…but, I like them.

  5. I just wanted to give my input…. I happen to really LOVE your socks. Sometimes I think flashing/pooling is really cool. But I’ll let you in on a little secret… I can’t do it.. no matter how hard I try, I have never gotten a pair of socks that I WANT to pool to pool… Weird eh?

  6. I know what you mean about the “meh” factor–sometimes pooling looks awesome, but in this case, well…meh. Love the name, though, and love the colors!

  7. I absolutely love them! The pooling makes them so unique and quite lovely in my opinion. It looks so random that it is very artistic.

  8. I wonder if a different needle size would have helped them. Oh, there’s nothing with them, but I can see why you’re not feeling the love.

I love Claudia’s tutorial. Maybe for the next pair…

  9. They’re pretty…and with football season coming on they remind me more of a team color than a beach house!
Maybe a different needle size would change the pooling issue?

  10. That’s a bummer about the pooling and flashing, but in a way I kind of like the idea to go along with Beach House socks…driftwood and sand and surf….it all kind of fits.

  11. It’s funny how some people love the pooling and others do not. I am not a huge fan of pooling, but I really liked it in the other socks that you knit recently.

You are fast, fast, fast when it comes to socks!

  12. That is certainly some interesting stuff going on there. The upside to any pair of hand knit socks. They’re better than store bought… even if they aren’t the most beautiful socks you dreamed them to be. 🙂

  13. I think they are perfect. They look like the kind of socks you would wear at the beach house because your husband (or kid) acidentally but too much bleach in the wash.

  14. I don’t know I kind of like them! And I usually don’t like the pooling and flashing behavior of most yarn. These have this freshly stepped out of the fireplace look 🙂 Just kidding! Seriously I like them. If your feet were a size 10 I’d gladly take them off your hands!

  15. I think they’re fine. Not my favorite pair that you’ve done, but I still like them. Are your legs really that tanned? I’m a bit envious. 🙂

  16. I love the color combination, but I’m on the fence about the flashing and pooling also. I’m curious as to how long those color repeats are? Obviously they’re too long or not long enough. I wonder why this has happened to you twice? Hmmmm…..

  17. Well, I may be in the minority but I love it when this happens, at least with socks. A sweater, not so much…but socks are meant to be wild and crazy, right?
