Selbuvotter Mittens

I finished another pair of mittens for NaKniMitMo. These are the Selbuvotter mittens I promised Dale last year when I made a pair for me. Yeah, it took a while. But I’m pretty sure he thinks they were worth waiting for.

The pattern is NHM #12. I had Dale go through the whole Selbuvotter book and these were the ones he chose.

The yarn is Mission Falls 1824 Wool. It was nice to work with – soft and smooshy – but it bled a bit when I blocked the mittens. There are a few spots where the white looks a bit blue but I’m probably the only one who really notices it. Still, it was a disappointment and I didn’t expect this yarn to do that.

I changed the thumb a bit and knit this star design from a different chart in the book. I just thought it would look better and I’m glad I did it.

They go great with his Civil War uniform and he wore them to the annual meeting on Saturday. He said he showed them off a bit and everyone was impressed. I couldn’t be more pleased!

  1. Those are stunning! I lusted after the mission falls 1924 when it first came out, loved the colors… then I got some and was not very pleased with it (just a hat so who cares!). Glad you had a good experience with it.

And I love that Dale is standing in front of a sign that says “homemade”!

  2. Not surprised on the bleeding…blue is almost guaranteed to bleed. You’re right, though…I don’t see it.

I hadn’t thought of this pattern for historical reenactment, but they haven’t changed the motifs for centuries, so bingo!

  3. Great mittens, great model! I’d be inclined to drop the yarn company a line and mention the problem – can’t hurt and they should know about it.

  4. I just made a hat using Mission Falls, and it is nice and soft. Hmmm, it’s a gift, I hope it won’t fade on everything once it’s washed …

*LOVE* the picture of your husband in full regalia with his mittens!

  5. Those look great! I’ve been tempted to make some for my cousins in Switzerland, and seeing yours is pushing me a little further down the “road to ruin”.

  6. Those are beautiful mittens and really do look wonderful with the uniform. I had the same thing happen with my husband’s hat of the same yarn and colors. Being the great guy that he is, he said it made it look even better.

  7. The mittens are awesome! Is this a secret, coded message that means you’re coming out to Salt Lake to take the class with Terri Shea??

  8. Your colourwork gauge looks perfectly even. Lovely!

The juxtaposition of the mittens with the uniform is truly excellent (and historically possible, yes?). Dale is redefining the entire concept of the husband model!

  9. Did Civil war soldiers wear Selbuvotter mittens?

They’re lovely. I suppose (having joined the MAL) I should knit some mittens pretty soon.

  10. Oooh, they’re gorgeous! They must be really warm – I need to knit my next pair out of a larger wool but tighter. I did some out of fingering weight and they are a little loose.

  11. Love those! Just got the book and have been poring over it. Looks like a thumbs up. Nice job!

  12. Just a little tidbit, Shout has a paperlike product that will pick up any loose dyes in water and prevent bleeding, it may even be able to remove the discoloration even now so you may want to try it the next time you wash these mittens. I’ve used it many times with success (as long as I did not dry the garment in dryer). Beautiful mittens.

  13. Beautiful, beautiful gloves. Please, please feature Dale on your Eye Candy Friday photo post!! ( Is there a Dale Fan Club?)

  14. thumbs up is right! it’s a nice touch the poster behind Dale says “”handmade”. LOL

  15. Great mittens! I love the black and white, which is actually my favorite color combo. I have been thinking of a new pair of mittens, but haven’t actually made it to selecting a pattern and yarn. All in good time, I suppose.
