Oscar Chat

February 16, 2009 By Carole

So as you may recall, I am a huge fan of The Oscars. I love the movies, I love the actors and actresses, I love the red carpet and the commentary, I love the show. Really, this is my favorite night of television all year long and the show is less than a week away now! I can’t wait to dress up and eat fancy food while we watch.

Once the nominations are announced we try very hard to see as many of the Oscar-nominated pictures as possible. At the very least I like to see all the best picture nominees and this year we did! (That’s not as easy as you might think, living out here in the ‘burbs and all.) This year’s best picture nominees are:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,
Frost/Nixon

Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire.

Have you seen them? Which one is your favorite? Which one do you think will win?

Discuss.

Believe it or not – haven’t seen any of them. Come to think of it the last movie I’ve seen in a theatre was probably animated. We don’t get out much 😉

I have not seen a single one, but I’m rooting for Frost/Nixon and Kate Winslet. I might even watch a bit of the show. Have a fun night!!

*sigh* Our movie time is so very minimal that we haven’t seen any of the films this year. When the kids are older…

…but I’m a huge fan of the oscars and will watch anyway. 🙂

Like the others so far, I haven’t seen any of them. But from your reviews, I’d go with Slumdog Millionaire. But I’ve heard good things about all of them.

So, do you dress up in gowns like the celebrities? What movie do you think will win?

Oh my, none – so far. Maybe Frost/Nixon and Milk on DVD at some point. Once the kids are old enough to leave alone, then one has the elderly parent who can’t be left alone. Irritated sigh. But we can watch the Oscars! In our case, probably in our flannel pjs. (One of us – hint, it will be my husband – will be snoozing in his chair by 8:30 pm…)

I usually try to see all the best picture nominees too, but this year I’ve fallen severely behind–I’ve only seen Slumdog. Which I loved and hope will win.

A local theater chain will, next Saturday, run the 5 best pix nominees back-to-back. The first two are Milk and The Reader, both of which I badly want to see, so for sure I’m going to those. The next is Benjamin Button, which I’m on the fence about, then Slumdog, which I’ve seen, and finally Frost/Nixon–at 10 p.m. Way past my bedtime. 🙂 But at least I’ll have seen 3 of the “bests” before the Oscars on Sunday.

Ditto for me….haven’t seen one of them yet! The Reader, Milk and Slumdog Millionaire all sound great. And I love Frank Langella. I still watch the Oscars even if I haven’t seen the movies. It’s fun and a great diversion. This week, we may make to the Bugs Bunny festival at the Brattle Theater.

I’ve seen Benjamin Button and really loved it. I haven’t seen any of the others, though i would like to watch The Reader and Slumdog. I’m not interested in the other two.

I’ve seen Milk and Frost/Nixon, and think either of them would be a fantastic win – Milk, especially.

Also saw Benjamin Button, but I’m just not all excited about it like others were – rather overrated, I think.

Do intend to see the other two nominated films, too. LOVE Kate Winslet!

I read “The Reader” a long time ago but I suppose that doesn’t count.

I love the Oscars as well and used to do the same but the kids have kept me out of movie theaters for a good 5 years. (Too expensive to pay $50 to a sitter just to see a movie). I was able to see a movie a couple weeks ago with my sister but she didn’t want to see anything depressing or serious, hence we saw Bride Wars. No wonder it didn’t get nominated.

  15. jill says

    February 16, 2009 at 12:26 pm

I’m an Oscar night fan as well. I use to see all the movies, but in the last few years we only seem to go out to the movies with our kids. Since I don’t see High School Musical 3 on the list, I have not seen a thing nominated. Were we do only see one film, which was your favorite or most entertaining.

  16. Sara says

    February 16, 2009 at 1:31 pm

Haven’t seen any of them – but, they are on my list – I can only remember getting Benjamin Button here in town…rest haven’t shown up…and probably won’t!

We only have one theatre here in town…and it is no great shakes – but at least it is one…

I’m really torn between Benjamin Button and Milk…I have heard that all of them are really good – but, I like Pitt and Penn…and I’ve seen what Penn can do with a movie…

So those are my picks…and, I’ll be sitting there looking at all there is to see that night…

I have my fingers crossed for Slumdog Millionaire! A group of friends (who have seen every one of those nominated) have a Oscar night party… I usually see most of them but this year am missing a couple… passed up seeing Milk this past weekend to see Coraline in 3D!

  18. Stephanie says

  19. Doris says

I was surprised to see how many people hadn’t seen any, although I am adding myself to the list! I thought my husband and I were the only ones who never get out to the movies…we will see some of them on video at some point.

  21. Betty in Texas says

Not having seen them is not new with me. I usually see movies after they have been “out” for about five or ten years. If I go out nights I would rather do a chamber music concert. I still like movie popcorn – does that count?

  22. Kim says

    February 16, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Believe it or not Ken and I have not been to the movies in years, but we saw Milk on Valentines Day. It’s an uncomfortable movie in some ways to watch, but still very well done. Sean Penn was very good.

  23. Diane says

    February 16, 2009 at 10:12 pm

I’ve only seen one – Slumdog Millionaire – which is great, although some parts very hard to watch. The kids in it are amazing.

  24. Nell says

I haven’t seen any of them either! I’m more of a netflix girl. So I’ll catch ’em later. But I hope Slumdog wins. I’m always for the underdog.

  25. Rose says

Just yesterday, I went to see Milk. It was spectacular. Sean Penn really nails the role. James Franco was stellar as well. Haven’t seen any of the others, and likely won’t. So my fave to win at the moment is Milk, and Sean Penn for lead actor.

I haven’t seen any of those yet but Training Buddy & I went to Rachel Getting Married which some critics say should have been nominated. It was good, dark & depressing – just the way I like them. Training Buddy & I are running the Hyannis Half Marathon on Sunday and the best part of the day is we decided to stay over Sunday night so we can get some wine & maybe pizza & watch all the Oscar stuff in the comfort of the hotel – no hubbies (who don’t like anything Oscar) – we love it as well & this will be the perfect girl’s weekend – other than having to run 13.1 miles!

I have only seen Slumdog Millionaire with a group of my girlfriends. One of my friends who had seen it previously said she had been thinking of it and the whole story reminded her of how Jesus keeps after us in love. I thought that was a wonderful analogy. And a great movie. The only one I saw. I do not ever watch the Oscars.
