Ten On Tuesday

March 23, 2010 By Carole

First Day of Spring! resized for blog

Today’s topic for Ten on Tuesday is 10 Signs of Spring. Hooray for spring and the signs of it, too!

  1. Crocuses. I’ve got purple and yellow and white and they all make me so happy.
  2. Red-winged blackbirds. I saw 6 yesterday in the field near my house. Again with the happy.
  3. Spring peepers. I haven’t heard them yet but it’s just a matter of time.
  4. Pussy willows. Soft and fuzzy and a sure sign of the end of winter.
  5. Kids on the playground. The playground next to the library has been buzzing with activity and, while this annoys the hell out of my in July, in March it is a wonderful sound.
  6. Opening the windows. I threw them open last week and it felt great to air out the house.
  7. Driving with the sun roof open. Sunshine! Coming in from the roof of the car! Love it!
  8. Going outside without a jacket. Sure, I love wool mittens and stuff but the freedom of no coat is a wonderful thing.
  9. Daffodil buds. Mine should be in bloom by the end of the week, I think.
  10. Burning. Nothing is quite so distinctive as the smell of burning in the spring. Sure, it makes my throat scratchy and my eyes itchy but it’s still a cool thing in these parts.

This was probably one of the easiest 10 on Tuesday lists I’ve ever written. I really do love spring!

I woke up to the sound of birds singing this morning. That’s one of my very favorite things about spring. One of my magnolia’s is blooming. Mid March is crazy early for it, so I’m sure those pretty blooms will get zapped on a cold night very soon, but they sure are pretty.

I drove home from work with the sun in my eyes, but the wipers going because it was windy and raining. We get some weird signs of spring here in Boise!

The birds are chirping their spring song and I saw a tree (one lone tree) in bloom, but spring is coming to your neighborhood more quickly. It’s still quite chilly here.

I’ve got spring peepers! After their initial announcement of their arrival on Sunday evening they have been silent. Perhaps they are protesting the rain. Spring is my favorite season- I wish it lasted longer here in NE.

My minivan has a sunroof (talk about an oxymoron!) and I love it as much as you do yours. Oh, and have you ever seen the red-winged blackbirds during mating season? The males fluff up the red part of their wings and strut about — they look like they are wearing red and yellow epaulets!

I’m loving the crocuses, too! My favorite part of spring is walking home in the evening while it’s still light out 🙂

The daffodils at my little house are already blooming … the wonders of raised flower beds! One more … forsythia bushes starting to pop with that gorgeous yellow 🙂

If there’s one thing the pandemic has been good If there’s one thing the pandemic has been good for, it’s my sourdough game. I actually started learning about making sourdough bread a week before the stay at home orders thanks to @sprboston as he shared his starter and recipe and technique with me. Since then I have kept Mama Cass fed and alive and have baked many loaves of bread. This one might be my best one yet. I did the final proof in the fridge for 24 hours and baked it from its cold state.
