Time in a Tipi

May 18, 2011 By Carole

There’s something I like to do outside that I didn’t mention yesterday. I like to hang out in our tipi. I know, I know, I’ve never told you about the tipi. And technically it’s not ours, it just lives in our garage and belongs to Dale’s Boy Scout troop. The cool thing about providing storage, though, is that we can occasionally set it up and enjoy it.

And that’s what we did on Sunday. And by “we” I mean that Dale set it up and I enjoyed it.

Have you ever been inside a tipi? They are fairly spacious and structurally quite beautiful.

The poles reach towards the sky and the white canvas stretches over them.

We listened to music while we were out there. We started with Native American dance and pow wow music but then morphed to folk music. It was relaxing and wonderful.

We had ourselves a little fire in the tipi. We didn’t need it much for warmth but it helped take away the dampness of the day.

As evening fell we cooked a steak over that fire. The tipi smelled fantastic then and Dale declared that was just about the best steak he’d ever had.

I’m sure the neighbors think we are weirdos but honestly, I don’t care. It’s so awesome to be able to go out in the backyard but feel like you’re a million miles away.

You just can’t beat that feeling.

That is so neat! Many moons ago I did walk into a tipi during a field trip with my students. I was amazed at how big and cozy it was. I can just smell the aroma of cooking steaks! Yum!

I’m pretty sure that if your neighbors think you’re weird, it’s not because of the tipi, hehe! Love that you cooked a steak over the fire … my dad loved doing that 🙂

Hey, we have a tiki bar in our backyard, you have a tipi bar (I remember you posted you were having wine in it). So each to her own I say! Sounds cool to me!

Love it, love it!! Our friend has a teepee set up in his back yard and we love being inside. His wife will only sleep in the teepee as she loves sleeping under the animal skins and doesn’t care for a regular bed. Teepees are just so cool!
Your evening looks tasty and fun!!

That looks like so much fun! I love it! I remember once many years ago that we decided to test a tent out in our front yard. We got such weird looks from our neighbors. I can only imagine the looks we’d get if we erected a tipi!

I have been tempted lately to buy a tent just for the express purpose of backyard camping. Sometimes you just need to get out of your own space!

    That sounds wonderful!

Steve slept in a tipi when he went on a dinosaur dig many years ago. I was reluctant and stayed in a cottage nearby. I didn’t dig, either. I kind of wish I had!

If I were your neighbor, I would want to get my own!
Back in the day when my college freshman was a boy scout he camped out in the yard in a tent with my husband who was also the troop leader. I couldn’t believe they spent the whole night out there! That was until they confessed they went out to breakfast at 7:00 in the morning.

P.S. Nothing like a grilled steak outdoors. YUM!!!

I am so jealous! That sounds like something I have always wanted to do. We live on a farm and do you think I can get my husband to let me have a burn pit!? Heck no! I’m coming to your house…….:)

I actually started learning about making sourdough bread a week before the stay at home orders thanks to @sprboston as he shared his starter and recipe and technique with me. Since then I have kept Mama Cass fed and alive and have baked many loaves of bread. This one might be my best one yet. I did the final proof in the fridge for 24 hours and baked it from its cold state.
