Ten On Tuesday

You would think, since I am a librarian, that I read a lot. And these days you would be right – I’ve been reading up a storm. Or, at least, a storm for me. I think it’s partially because I love the Kindle app on my iPad but I think it’s mostly because of GoodReads. I get a daily email telling me what my friends are reading as well as their recommendations and reviews and this has really made a big difference in getting me excited about reading again. And so, today’s Ten On Tuesday topic is a list of the Last 10 Books I Have Read.

  1. The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This is really a short story but boy does it make an impression.
  2. Frances & Bernard by Carlene Bauer. It’s been a long time since I have read an epistolary novel and I must say I truly enjoyed this one.
  3. The Blackberry Pie Murder by Joanne Fluke. The Hannah Swenson mystery series are a guilty pleasure for me. Very simple but pretty entertaining and with recipes, too.
  4. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. I enjoyed this very much. It’s long but the characters are like real people and the story is good. Not as good as The Little Friend . . . but worth reading.
  5. Wonder by R.J. Pallacio. This is a juvenile fiction title that, in the words of my friend and colleague, everyone should read. Everyone. It won’t take much time, I read it in a day, but it will change the way you look at the world.
  6. Visitation Street by Ivy Pochada. It took me a while to get into the story but once I did I was hooked and I couldn’t wait to find out what.really.happened.
  7. The Law of Similars by Chris Bohjalian. I am a huge fan of Bohjalian’s and somehow I missed this title when it first came out. It’s fairly similar to Midwives but that’s not a bad thing at all.
  8. The Man in the Window by Jon Cohen. This is a Nancy Pearl recommendation and I loved it. It actually prompted me to start a very small book club with a few close friends and I’m grateful for that.
  9. W is for Wasted by Sue Grafton. Can you believe the alphabet mysteries aren’t done yet? I feel like I’ve been reading Kinsey Millhone stories my whole life. I’ll be said when she finally reaches Z.
  10. Wishin’ and Hopin’ by Wally Lamb. I got this free on Amazon and it was a good holiday story but nothing great. Certainly nothing like She’s Come Undone or I Know This Much is True.

Turns out, those are all the books I have read so far this year. I have to admit that I liked the way that worked out. If you wrote a post today then please add your link below and if you want to receive an email with the Ten On Tuesday topic every Monday, click here to sign up.

  1. I love your book cart photo and your varied list. I really enjoyed The Goldfinch and The Secret History; now The Little Friend is on my list. Thanks!

  2. Oh goodie! I need some new reading ideas. Can’t wait to peruse the thoughts of folks here. I was a little reading nerd from the time I learned how to read.

  3. Thank you for the suggestions. I am a poor reader in my old age (which is why I didn’t participate this week). Considering my favorite place to visit (besides a yarn shop) is a bookstore, you would think I would have more books on my list! Wonder sounds like a must read for me, especially since it’s a quick one.

  4. I LOVE this topic! I read all the time & it seems weird when I meet people who don’t read. I just can’t imagine what they do with their time.

I recently did an assessment, which tells you what your ideal career(s) would be. Librarian was one of mine. I’m still considering it…

  5. I love Wally Lamb and Chris Bohjalian! So, I will have to put some of these books on my TBR list. Thanks, Carole.

  6. oh my… my audiblewishlist is going to explode! think i might have to move into platinum membership 😉
    thanks for great topic!

  7. a few of those are on my to-read list (The Goldfinch and Frances and Bernard) and I’m going to add a few more. Great topic – thanks!

  8. I also admit to reading Janet ivonavich’s MANHUNT. Silly, bordering on stupid and yet I had to make myself finish it. It was sent to me in a swap

  9. Here’s my list: http://knitfitter.blogspot.com/2014/03/ten-on-tuesday-books.html. Am I finally back to Ten on Tuesday? This was just the topic to draw me back in! I have to say, I’m a bit jealous of your job. Librarian was always my secret dream job because I feel so at home among books and at libraries and I love the order of it all (a peaceful refuge for a nerdy kid). Wish I had pursued it. I’d love to read more about what you do, and I always like when you make book suggestions. Thank you!

  10. Great list! I’ve been doing a lot of book reviews this year (I always do a lot of reading) so this one was an easy yet fun prompt for me.

Of course, a “10 books on your TBR pile” prompt would also be easy, though limiting it to 10 would be quite hard! 🙂

  11. I generally like Chris Bohjalian too and was not familiar with The Law of Similars. I’ve added it to my list. Thanks for the recommendation 🙂 The Goldfinch is my Book Club’s selection for next month and I’m looking forward to that too.

  12. I’m about to read S is for Silence. I’m intentionally going slowly because I just don’t want the series to end. I’ll have to look at some of the others on your list and probably add a few to my TBR list.

  13. Thank you for this topic. It is my favorite! I keep a written journal and a goodreads page is books I wish to read. There’s just SO MANY!!

  14. Do you really like the blackberry murder book ? The reviews I have read aren’t that good. But I have though about getting it.

  15. I’m always looking for book recommendations. I was so disappointed in Wishin’ and Hopin’ and I loved She’s Come Undone. As a mental health professional it was so accurate and he wrote convincingly from a woman’s point of view. At least you got yours for free?! I paid for it. Double disappointment.

  16. I’ve been a bit of a slacker reading lately, but Wonder was AMAZING! Also of the same genre..Out Of My Mind.
