Spontaneity Enhances Happiness

On the way home from work on Monday I stopped to get corn to go with the burgers I had planned for our dinner. I forgot the farm stand closes at 5 on Mondays, though, and when I got there everything was locked up tight. I drove home (since I was so close) and told Dale that we’d have to get the corn from a different farm stand. He offered to go and I said, let’s go together. So we hopped into the Mustang to drive the mile or so to the other farm stand. On the way we drove past Blogless Sharon’s house and, since she was out in her driveway, we beeped and waved. We procured our corn and, on the way back home, saw that Sharon was still in the driveway. So we stopped.

She was thrilled to see us and quickly set about opening a bottle of wine, setting out some snacks, and gathering some chairs by the side of her house. (She has a charming patio but we chose to sit in the driveway since it’s closer to all of the action and comings and goings of various family members.) We were joined shortly by her husband, Al, and her daughter and son-in-law, and we had a perfectly lovely time, chatting and catching up. We opened more wine. We had more snacks. Sharon urged us to stay for dinner and we happily accepted, offering up our corn to add to the feast.

The next thing I knew it was 9:30 and, being the only one of the bunch who had to work the next day, I decided we ought to call it a night. But what a night it was! Completely spontaneous and so much fun and a perfect example of how lucky we are to have the friends we have in such close proximity to our home.

It’s kinda cool that they have alpacas, too. Just sayin.

  1. Blogless Sharon sounds like a lot of fun. And spur of the moment gatherings are just the best!

P.S. I had to type “blogless” about seven times ’til autocorrect finally gave up changing it!
