Think Write Thursday: Holiday Spirit

The Think Write Thursday prompt for this week is to write about holiday spirit. What does it mean to have holiday spirit? Do you feel like you have it this year? Why or why not?

To me, having holiday spirit means being happy and excited about the Christmas season. It means to revel in all of the traditional things we do. To bake cookies and share them with friends. To celebrate the solstice and state our intentions for the year ahead. To gaze in wonder at all those twinkle lights. To slow down and savor special moments. To feel, above all else, peace, contentment, joy and love.

I’ve been struggling to write this post and get my feelings into words – something that’s rare for me. But I think the way I felt Sunday night is actually a really good example of what it means for me to have holiday spirit. I was carrying a snack I had prepared for Dale and I from the kitchen into the living room. Christmas music filled the house and as I stood in the doorway of our living room I looked around at the twinkle lights and candle glow, at the blazing woodstove and the cat sleeping peacefully in front of it, and my eyes filled with tears of joy. Just then Dale came into the room and I looked at him and said, I’m so happy. I’m so lucky. I’m so content.

It was a moment of perfect holiday spirit. And it’s a moment I want to hold on to and remember, to repeat over and over, right through this season and on into forever.

  1. I second Bonny’s thoughts – you are indeed a very rare friend Carole. May your joy continue to overflow as we draw near to Christmas and fill the New Year abundantly! XOXO

  2. I am struggling with the spirit of the season but it really has been good to write it out. I am going to see if I can’t find that contentment too.

  3. As cliche as it sounds it’s the simple things that get me into the holiday spirit. I’m looking forward to my daughter coming home from college to help me get into the spirit. Stay warm!

  4. What a pretty picture!
May we all find such love and peace and contentment this holiday season and in the new year too.
