Unraveling

No unraveling here this week but no real knitting progress either. This is (still) sock number 1 of my Disco Superfly socks. It’s all good but I find it interesting that I brought another skein of sock yarn with me to New York City to start a new pair in anticipation of finishing these on our trip. The reality? I didn’t knit a single stitch. In fact, I never even took them out of my bag! I spent my time on the train reading and really didn’t have any down time while in the city. Sure, it would have been cool to knit in Central Park or on the subway, but I was only carrying a very small cross body bag while we traipsed around and there wasn’t room for my knitting in that bag. If I was being honest about my habits I could have predicted this but a knitter is nothing if not hopeful and we always want to have a back up project.

The same goes for reading, honestly, which is why I love my kindle. I thought I’d finish The Great Believers on our trip and if I was carrying real books I’d have brought a back up. Or two. With my kindle that’s never a concern since I’ve generally got my maximum allowed number of check outs from Overdrive at all times. I did finish The Great Believers right after we got back and I’m now reading When They Call You a Terrorist, which is as heartbreaking and powerful as you might expect.

And that’s it for me this week. I’ll be sharing this post over at Kat’s to join with my fellow unravelers but I still want to know . . .  what are you knitting and reading right now?

This Post Has 15 Comments

  1. Reading – “The Good Neighbor,” a biography of Fred Rogers. Knitting – logo hats for twin babies. Note to self: the Red Sox B is easy, but the Chicago Bears C is not.

  2. Isn’t it wonderful that we can travel with enough knitting AND reading to never run out of either! I remember when I got my Kindle(back in 2011) that I purposely chose the one without cell service because I couldn’t imagine needing to download a book if I were away from the internet. and now. I totally get why it’s handy!

  3. I am reading “Love and Other Consolation Prizes” by Jamie Ford and knitting a pair of Groovy Socks with Desert Vista Dyeworks yarn. She has an ongoing contest and if you knit a pair of socks every month with her yarn, you get a free skein at the end of the year. This is my fifth year in a row, and I will be glad when it’s over. I’ve enjoyed it, but I will run out of yarn this December, and it’s time to move on to something else.

  4. I love that…knitters are nothing if not hopeful…so true. Reading The Poisonwood Bible and knitting sock #2!

  5. I always schlepp knitting when I travel . . . and never knit a stitch! (Ever hopeful is right!) I love that Disco Superfly sock. Such great stripes.

  6. I have never, ever run out of knitting when I’ve traveled. I always overpack on the yarn! And you’re right about the wonderful thing that is a Kindle for travel reading!

Right now I’m trying to finish up a pair of socks (just afterthought heels to go) and am reading “A Well-Read Woman,” which was an Amazon freebie — it’s a biography of a woman who escaped Nazi Germany and ended up being a librarian at the Library of Congress.

  7. Knitters and readers are so optimistically hopeful! I always pack extra reading and knitting when I travel (even if it’s not very far), mainly because the thought of being stuck somewhere without anything to read or knit is frankly terrifying!

  8. You and Bonny are so right about carrying plenty of knitting and reading. I took a single project on a driving trip and got stuck on 3week’s blizzard!

  9. I am in that hopeful knitter category as well – we leave this weekend to visit the kids and I have begun to ‘plan out my knitting’ to take. Ever hopeful! lol

As for reading, I am listening to a book that I just cannot stop – John Boyne’s A Ladder to the Sky. Good thing I am heading to the garden this afternoon to finish up the weeding – I will have very good company!

  10. Knitting and books are such great companions for travel, and they take up so little room, so why not? I am not knitting much lately, but still am hopeful. I am reading The Animals by Christian Kiefer, a new to me author. Look forward to your thoughts on the books, and your sock reminds of the Color Museum!

  11. Love the sock! It’s funny – I saw the photo and had an instant flashback to high school…. then read it’s name. Perfect!! I’m sorry you didn’t get to knit in Central Park but glad you had a good trip.

  12. Sounds as if you were well prepared for knitting and reading even if it didn’t happen. The sock looks quite bright and cheerful. I like it.

  13. I’ve never run out of knitting, stitching, or books on a trip. Leaving Sat for vacay and trying to pare back on what I bring!
