Three On Thursday

Because last week Gale said it was okay to use this topic every week . . . I’m once again posting three things making me happy right now.

  1. Longer days. The sunset is now after 5pm and that means it’s light out when I leave work.  And, right now each day has more than 2 minutes of daylight than the one before. Hallelujah.Tuesday night I drove home with a magnificent pink and orange sunset filling the sky and it made me smile the whole way home.
  2. Amaryllis bulbs. I planted mine about 10 days ago (I like to enjoy the blooms after Christmas when there’s less stuff in my house and also actual room on my windowsill) and they are starting to show signs of life. Well. Mostly. I planted 3 and 2 of those 3 are showing green leaves. The 3rd one is taking a little longer to wake up but I have faith that it will soon. Once they really start growing it’s an amazingly fast process from leaves to blooms and I’m looking forward to watching that happen.
  3. The Oscars are on this Sunday. I know, I know, The Oscars are flawed. Eight of the nine best picture nominees are about white people and if you remove A Marriage Story and Little Women, they are all about white men. Little Women is the only Best Picture nominated film directed by a woman. All of that points to a lack of diversity and I’m frustrated by that. AND (see what I did there, Mary?) I love the Oscar show anyway. I love the spectacle of it. I love seeing all those famous people gathered in one place. I love that my annual quest to see every Best Picture nominee pushes me to see movies I would never even consider otherwise. (I’m looking at you, Joker.) The Oscars make me happy because, as I’ve been truly learning lately, you can have more than one feeling about something that has happened. You can be happy at The Oscars and frustrated about the lack of diversity at the same time.

And there you have my list of three things making me happy this week. I hope you have lots making you happy, too.

  1. That’s a good list! And yes, it is okay to do this every week. My post for today is the same topic (prepared it before I read yours).
I love what you say about having more than one feeling about something. I always make myself choose a side, but maybe that isn’t necessary. I’ll have to think about that. Thank you!

  2. YAY, I love your #3!! I watch the Oscars only for the red carpet. and I think this is a wonderful way to use Three on Thursday. I was thinking this morning that the gratitude list is one of the best parts of my morning journaling practice.

  3. The additional light is kinda, sorta maybe noticeable here. We’ve had a lot of overcast afternoons lately. But we’re creeping closer to an acceptable amount of light, and the knowledge of that helps.

  4. Wonderful! I am definitely noticing longer days, and they are so welcome!! I am with you completely on #3. I have my Tivo set to record the Oscars as I won’t be home to watch!

  5. I totally agree with you on number 3. It’s possible to enjoy the spectacle and still be frustrated with it. I’ll be watching (well, at least part of it — it’s on way too late for a Sunday night for me!) and also hoping that they do better next year.

  6. Happy things are always welcome! I’m with Bonny – 1 & 2 make me smile…I am not interest in and don’t care about the Oscars, but I’m glad you enjoy. The lengthening days are so obvious now – even grey, wet days seem lighter.

  7. The wonderful things to be happy about and I too am soooo happy to have light until close to 5:30 now! Woo Hoo! We’ll be on decks before you know it!

  8. You (and Gale) are right! It’s always a good idea to post about things that make you happy! The Oscars are flawed. They’ve always been flawed. But movies are fun and the Oscars are spectacle and it’s winter. So enjoy! XO

  9. I’m going to stand by my liking the happy posts. It’s basically a license to be random and positive, right?
Thanks for reminding me about the But….And difference!

  10. The return of the light is one of the major things that is making me happy these days. We haven’t had sun for a couple of weeks, and today the sun is shining! It makes me so happy to have longer days and sunshine. I don’t give a fig about the Oscars, but it makes me happy that you will enjoy them. I think you are very wise to realize that there is more than one way to feel about something. Like Robert DeNiro in Analyze This, “I’m conflicted” in my life, often!

  11. Remembering to be happy and the things that make you smile is a good thing. My amaryllis are on their way out. I need a plan for staking them before next year’s arrive-they got too tall and were kinda droopy, but I do love watching them grow. Enjoy the Oscars tonight!
