Three On Thursday

Is it really Thursday again? This week has flown by for me! Today I’ve got 3 random things to share with you.

  1. Do you follow the moon cycles? Right now we’re in the new moon phase and that’s a perfect time to release things that don’t serve you and set intentions for the month to come. I think it’s a great idea to spend some time meditating on these things and then go ahead and journal to put your ideas on paper. It’s also not a bad idea to take those things you want to release and write them on a separate piece of paper and burn them.
  2. I recently, at the urging of Jessica, signed up for a Fab Fit Fun box. It arrived the other day and I have to say I was underwhelmed. I have to assume some responsibility for this, though. You see, the way this works is that you can choose 3 things yourself and then they choose your other things. When I chose my things I got caught up in the value of the items rather than really considering what I would enjoy receiving. So I wound up choosing a black tote bag (which I definitely don’t need) and a necklace (which I will never wear because I don’t like necklaces). Going forward I will be choosier when I make my selections.
  3. Every once in a while I decide I want to dabble in ancestry work. Guess what? It’s every once in a while! I’m trying to work on my mother’s maternal line and damn but our patriarchal society makes it hard to trace our women ancestors. I’m still going to give it a shot but with great great grandparents named William Jones and Anna (Smith) Jones . . . well . . . it might be hard to find much about them as those names aren’t exactly unique!

That’s all I’ve got for this Thursday, friends. If you wrote a post for today please include your link below and thanks for joining me with your three things.

  1. My mother spent years tracing our family’s ancestry, complete with trips to cemeteries, courthouses, and Salt lake City. When she died we had to decide what to do with 16 tubs of her research. I respect the work she put into it, but the totes did not come to clutter up my house.

  2. My aunt is an avid genealogist, but our family, being Eastern European Jewish, has just slightly more distinctive names than Jones and Smith (but certainly she has had to deal with trying to read Polish and Russian records). I find it interesting to see what she’s uncovered, but I really don’t have much desire to do it myself. I hope you’re able to get some good leads on your own family tree.

  3. I would love to trace my family tree… but boy, I have some of the same issues you do with names (not Smith or Jones, but yeah… it is challenging!)

  4. I’m really lucky that most of my ancestry has already been painstakingly charted by others! (There is only one family line – my mom’s father’s – that hasn’t already been researched extensively.) I can just sit back and enjoy the fruits of my ancestor’s labors. 😉 I really enjoy tracking the lunar cycles, and have developed entire “rituals” for myself around the new moon and the full moon. I am just Not A Fan of any of these in-a-box things, I’m afraid. While I think the surprise factor is fun, it’s usually full of stuff we don’t really need and probably wouldn’t ever purchase for ourselves. A great pick-me-up gift — but not something I’d want to do on the regular.

  5. I have not heard of that Fab Fit box. I keep looking at Stitch Fix but I didn’t have a great experience when I did it a few years ago. Maybe I just need to clean out my closet ?

  6. My Dad did a ton of ancestry research and luckily my sisster-in-law really enjoys that…so she got all the files and papers from my Dad. I’m interested in reading stories and all, just not interested in doing the research!

  7. Your post just encouraged me to contact someone who had promised to send some family history my way and hasn’t. I’d like to do that work too one day…fortunately our names are a bit easier to track! And I did FitFabFun a couple of times and there were a few really awesome items but in the end…just more stuff I didn’t really need.

  8. I wish I cared more about my ancestry. My mom traced her family back to the early 1100’s (she paid someone to do it.) So it will be easy if I ever begin to care.
As for the moon, ill be setting my intentions this evening as well.

  9. Do I remember correctly that you also have Swedish heritage? If you need a resource in that department, I had a very valuable experience with the Emigration Museum in Vaxjo—and I’m sure they’d work with you online! But it sounds like you’re not working on a Swedish line at the moment…. Good luck with this stretch of the project!

  10. Can we make it Four on Thursday?? (I know it is not as punny, but…) Our FAVORITE Bus driver made us SO incredibly happy this morning driving up to now pick up 2 of our girls!!! Absolute best surprise of this week, smiles ear to ear on all of us! (Even his new rider Makayla kept saying I wonder if Dale is going to be driving. 🙂

Also love the first idea, I am sure I can come up with a few for sure! 2nd, FFF can be great if you choose things you want to try or will need/use. I tried a starter box but I only did it because it only cost like $7 for shipping. I did not continue because I can never justify spending any money on myself, like ever unfortunately. 3rd, good luck with that I will be interested to find out if you are able to dig up anything!

  11. I’m intrigued by the moon phases, but haven’t ever done anything with it … thank you for the push! and good luck with your family research. I was gifted hundreds of years of history (all four of my grandparents were into it, and I can trace ancestors back to the 1600’s (and earlier on my mom’s dad’s side). Marc, however, knows almost nothing about his family – all four of his grandparents (if I’m remembering correctly) immigrated to the US as children, fleeing persecution. I don’t think his parents or grandparents were interested in passing along what they knew. and now Marc and his sisters are trying to piece together lots of bits. One sister is very interested and researches on ancestry, but I’m not sure they’ve learned much so far.

  12. Oooh, good luck with your research!! I haven’t been actively involved in ancestry research in quite a few years, but I think I might someday get back to it. I would love to visit some of the places in Europe where my ancestors lived.

  13. I am so behind and here it is Thursday, but a week ago! I have an app on my phone that I love called Deluxe Moon. You can learn about the moon and the night skies and I really love it. Also, SkyView is a fun app to spot the planets and constellations!
