Three On Thursday

Can you believe it’s October 1st today? I mean, I know time is this weird thing right now where it feels fast and also slow but I’m still sort of floored that it’s already October. I’m ready to celebrate it, though, despite not feeling ready for it. Here are 3 good things about October!

  1. The weather. It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of summer. I love the long days and the warm sun. I’m not, however, a fan of humidity and summer and humidity, at least where I live, go hand in hand. Now that October is here our weather (usually) turns crisp and dry. In fact, the chance of a muggy day is only 5% and that drops even lower as the month goes in. In terms of temperatures, the average high is between 57° and 67° and the average low is between 53° and 43°. Do I prefer it warmer? Yeah. But do I love that low humidity? Oh hell yeah. And those cooler evenings are perfect for enjoying a fire in the fire pit.
  2. Fall decorations. I adore all the fall things I have throughout our house at this time of year. Pumpkins and silk leaves. Halloween signs and seasonal dishes. Soft quilts and fluffy blankets. Gourds and grasses and chrysanthemums outside. It makes everything look inviting and cozy and it makes me want to chill on the couch and read all day long.
  3. Comfort food. Forget the grill and the corn on the cob. It’s time for soups and stews and chili. Maybe a pot roast. Definitely some chicken and rice casserole. My sourdough starter is once again on the counter and I’m baking bread after a summer hiatus. It’s time for baking apple pie and making homemade cookies. I’m not into all that pumpkin spice hoopla but I do enjoy an occasional fall spice latte from my favorite coffee shop at this time of year, too.

I actually could go on and mention other things I love about October: it’s the birthday month of both of my grandsons . . . Halloween candy . . . sweaters and boots . . . and foliage. As Anne Shirley said, I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.

  1. I adore October, especially since I’ve moved to New Hampshire. I’m also reviving my sourdough starter – it’s time to resume my bread baking practice!! And thank you for reminding me about chicken and rice casserole – that’s going on my next meal plan 🙂

  2. Ahhh, October! Aside from the shorter days, it is well regarded here. Especially if it can block my view of November just a little longer.

  3. That leaf was the perfect choice! If you made it, kudos to your ingenuity. If you found it, kudos again for both seeing it and knowing what to do with it. Happy October! The month of the first snow.

  4. I am with you on loving the light and long days of summer but not loving the associated humidity. I love a cool, crisp October day, when you need a sweater or light jacket but also sunglasses. Add a warm beverage (but not pumpkin spice, yuck) and I’m in heaven!

  5. Ah, comfort food! I am so happy to start using the crockpot instead of the grill, make soup, and bake in the oven. This is my favorite season, and I’m so glad it’s here!

  6. Yes, all those things! But I have to say that I love October the most because it always shows me the most beautiful blue, clear skies of the year. I wish it could last at least 2 months more.

  7. Fall is my favorite season. Candy corn and pumpkins, cool crisp air, pretty leaves, pens and notebooks on sale, a hint of wood smoke in the air, jeans and boots, sweaters, and the excitement of Thanksgiving and Christmas planning…. What is there not to love about fall??

  8. Every time I read a post like this, I have to remind myself that October in The Netherlands was just dark and rainy. Nothing good about it. But I have to admit, I sometimes miss seasons…

  9. Yay for October! And may it last a bit longer than September did! Here’s to those outdoor fires and propane heaters to keep the season going. Do you have a special recipe for the chicken and rice casserole?

  10. It’s hard to limit the “good things about October” to just three things! you chose well! the sky is just bluer this month and that makes me so happy, along with long sleeves and jeans!

  11. I met with my retired teacher friends for a picnic lunch today. We were talking aobut how time is going fast and slow at the same time too. Every day seems just like every other day. It’s hard to remember what day of the week it is!

I am a huge fan of summer too, but I do love the heat and humidity. Always sad to see it go!

  12. Love all the same things about October-especially the food and the smells that go along with it. Something cozy about a simmering soup/stew and apples and cinnamon.
