Weekending

I think a long weekend, particularly one that includes Valentine’s Day, deserves a recap. We didn’t go anywhere but it was full of love and some really good food.

Love showed up on Friday afternoon when Jackie arrived. We watched Cars, his favorite movie, and we baked cinnamon muffins. He looks so much like his mama these days it sort of blows my mind.

Saturday was a great day for relaxing with books and knitting and just hanging out at home. We got sushi for dinner as a special treat for Valentine’s Day. It was delicious and our local sushi restaurant now offers online ordering so I don’t even have to talk to anyone. I call that a win!

I spent Sunday in the kitchen making cream puffs. It’s a long standing family tradition and even though it took all afternoon it was worth it for the smile it brings to Dale’s face.

This photo is also a great illustration of why I say plaid is his favorite color.

I also made spaghetti and meatballs for the first time. This is on my 21 in 2021 list and it’s one of Dale’s favorite meals and it’s red so . . . Valentine’s Day seemed like the perfect time to give it a whirl. It was easy and I have no idea why I was so intimidated by the process. I used this recipe from Food Network and I will definitely be making them again.

Monday, much like Saturday, was all about relaxing. More reading. More knitting. More television together in the evening. It was lovely.

I hope you had a great weekend, too, full of all the things you love.

  1. Why yes, the picture of Dale does seem to illustrate that his favorite color is plaid. Looks like a great weekend!

  2. I always pictured your cream puffs as bite-sized, but seeing plaid-clad Dale holding one, it looks like you make delicious man-sized cream puffs! (Someday I’ll give them a try!)

  3. Funny about the spaghetti and meatballs. My husband recently said it was one of his favorite meals and I had not made it in years. It is back in rotation now.

  4. Spaghetti and meatballs makes the rounds in our house. But limited palate you know 🙂 Yours look delicious and the cream puffs…yum!

  5. That does look like a lovely weekend – and I almost LOL’d at “I don’t even have to talk to anyone.” Aren’t we fortunate to have so many cozy things to do staying “in”?

  6. Mmm, cream puffs! They look delicious. Making pastry of some sort is on my 21 in 2021 list, so perhaps cream puffs are in my future.

Spaghetti and meatballs are a regular meal at our house because it’s one of few things my kid will reliably eat (though she doesn’t care for red sauce, so she usually has her spaghetti with butter or olive oil and the meatballs on the side). I usually make mine with turkey and do a riff on a turkey meatloaf recipe that I love — I add Italian seasonings (garlic, basil, oregano, pepper) as well as Parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar.

  7. YUM! Lots of great looking food there, Carole. Jackie looks the picture that must be in the dictionary to illustrate “sweet”, but I know he is a little boy, so he also must be an occasional challenge. Glad you had such a great weekend.

  8. Choux pastry is on my list of things to learn! I’m intimidated by that in the same way you were about spaghetti & meatballs, which I’ve made a million times. Haha.
