Monday On My Mind

Happy Monday, friends! I’ve got a couple of things on my mind to share with you today.

The 100 Day Project has been just thing ticket to push me into using my iPhone to take a photo every day. I have completed Project 365 for years and years but late last year I just . . . ran out of steam. And I stopped. It felt weird but also freeing. At the same time, I knew I was missing out on recording moments in our daily lives. I also knew my skills would slip without regular practice. So, I haven’t missed a day since January 31st and I’m glad.

I decided yesterday would be a good day to cook a whole turkey breast and do yet another mini Thanksgiving dinner. The turkey itself is easy, I love the old meat-in-a-pan thing. But I went with my usual assortment of sides: mashed potatoes, stuffing, turnip, brussels sprouts, and gravy. Even with just the two of us it’s not a small amount of work and by the time dinner was ready I had been in the kitchen for . . . a bit of time. Our deal is that I cook and Dale cleans up. Yesterday was a lot, though, so I helped by getting all those planned leftovers put away, and then I went into the living room and settled on the couch. I was feeling a little guilty about leaving Dale with all of that mess to clean up and thinking that maybe he was resenting it a bit. And then I heard him whistling. As he cleaned up. And I thanked my lucky stars for this man who is cheerful at all times.

Finally, a bit of housekeeping. Our Read With Us discussion of Leave the World Behind is coming up next Tuesday, March 2nd. Kym and Bonny and I will each by sharing a question on our blogs that day and then that evening we will be hosting a Zoom discussion of the book. If you’d like to join us just leave a comment on this here blog and one of us will send you the link for the meeting.

And that’s what’s on my mind this Monday. Let’s hope it’s a good week!

  1. Leftovers! That means dinners without work for a short while. That is actually one of my favorite things about Thanksgiving. I will have to do that again before it gets warm. You have inspired me, Carole. I hope you have a great Monday.

  2. My neighbor in NJ often whistles when he’s outside and it’s such a cheery sound. It even makes shoveling (and cleaning up after dinner) seem like fun!

  3. I had a neighbor who whistled when I was a kid. I loved it. It seemed like all the time. Perhaps it was all the time when he was outside so he didn’t drive his wife crazy.

I’m not up for a big meal, but we might need a little turkey too. Great idea.

  4. That sounds like a very nice way to spend a winter Sunday, Carole . . . with the payoff being a great and tasty meal! We have that same arrangement here: I cook, and Tom does the cleaning up. He actually thinks he has a far better deal. And I’m good with that! (Sometimes he cooks. And he still cleans up!) XO

  5. We have the same deal in our house. I clean up as I go and leave as few pans and utensils as possible. Still, I feel guilty hearing my husband toil in the kitchen after dinner; recently, I have decided to be the dryer of the team. We’ll see if I actually get off the couch and fulfill my secret pledge!

  6. I have never been able to keep up a photo a day streak even though I really love those month end collages with a photo for every day. It is great that your new phone has you inspired. Sadly I will have to miss the book chat since we have the boys on Tuesdays. I look forward to the blog based conversations.

  7. Rusty & I have the same arrangement. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him whistling, though! I do help out sometimes by doing some of the dishes while I’m cooking.

  8. I’m sure Dale was more than happy to clean up after having such a delicious meal! My husband and I have settled into a similar arrangement during the pandemic. Most nights I cook (usually because I finish work before he does) and then he cleans up. I usually clean as I go when I can, though, and I try not to make too big of a mess. But I really appreciate that he does it. It’s great when you work together as a team, isn’t it?

  9. Thank you for sharing that delightful story about Dale enjoying his clean-up! We still sing that stupid Barney song in our house (yes, just me and Marc) and it just makes the whole thing go faster 🙂

I read Leave the World Behind over the weekend and am looking forward to Tuesday night’s discussion (I let Kym know). If there was ever a book that BEGS to be discussed, this is it! and I’m thankful I’m only having to wait 10 days!
