Time to take a look back at the books I read in the month of…
Read With Us: The Friend Promo Post

You may recall that we are doing something a little different with our summer Read With Us event . . . we are reading the book The Friend by Sigrid Nunez and we are also watching the movie (same title) starring Naomi Watts and Bill Murray.
I read the book back in 2019 and gave it 4 stars. My review at the time was very short: Meditative, rambling, cerebral, and often confusing but still extraordinary. This book is definitely not for everyone but I was enchanted by the stream of consciousness and quality of the writing. I will be reading it again because I remember very little about it, which is typical of me and shouldn’t in any way be construed to mean that the book isn’t memorable.
I have not yet watched the movie but it’s on my radar and I’m sure Dale and I will watch it very soon. From everything I’ve read, it appears to closely follow the book, capturing a blend of grief, humor, love, and loss. It’s actually still in theaters and also available to rent on several streaming services.
I found this short interview with Watts and Murray on YouTube and you might enjoy hearing their thoughts on the movie and on working with a very big dog named Bing.
Kym has a terrific amount of resources about both the book and movie on her Read With Us page if you’re looking for even more information.
Our discussion will be on Tuesday, September 16, 20265 at 7pm on Zoom and Bonny, Kym and I hope you will join us!

Thanks for this reminder Carole. I’ve wanted to hold off reading it (so that perhaps I could remember it for our discussion). I’m planning to request the book in August (my library system has 18 copies and only one hold currently, so it should be easy to get). After I read it, Fletch and I will stream the movie. I’m looking forward to this one.
Like Vera, I’ve put off reading it for a while so I can hopefully remember details for our discussion. I actually started it and decided I wasn’t a fan of the writing style. I’ve returned it to the library for now, but will try again in a couple of weeks. It’s nice not to have to place a copy on hold for months!
I hope you and Dale enjoy the movie, Carole. Tom and I watched it, and Tom thought it was a bit slow in the beginning, but he ended up liking it by the end. (As he said . . . it was no “Lighthouse”!) 😉 I think readers who don’t like the writing style of the book might enjoy seeing the movie-version more. I think it’ll be interesting to compare and contrast.
