Read With Us: The Fall 2025 Announcement

It’s a day that only comes 4 times a year: the day we announce the next book for the Read With Us book club.

Cue the drumroll. It’s:

The Antidote by Karen Russell.

Full disclosure, I have not yet read this book. In fact, I’ve had it 3 times from Libby. Twice before we chose it, and it felt like too much for a summer read. I was intrigued but not all in so I returned it. And then I got it again last week and I considered that I should read it before our announcement, but ultimately decided to wait until closer to our discussion so that it would be fresh in my mind.

What I can tell you is that it’s a blend of historical fiction and magical realism with themes of memory, both personal and collective, a cast o characters who represent multiple viewpoints and voices, all wrapped up in gorgeous prose. I’ve seen it described as dazzling, disorienting and even occasionally overwhelming, but in the best way. It sounds like just the book to sink our teeth into this season and I’m betting it will provide us with plenty to talk about.

Our discussion will be on Tuesday, January 6th so please mark your calendars. Bonny and Kym and I are really excited for this next Read With Us adventure and we hope you’ll come along.

  1. Like you, I had this book and didn’t read it. I read a review of it in Columbia’s alumni magazine (the author is a graduate of Columbia) and thought it sounded great, but could not get into it. There is currently no wait at my library for it, so I’ve decided to wait until closer to our discussion time to read.

  2. This sounds like a fascinating book! I am on the waitlist… which is moving surprisingly quickly!

  3. I’m looking forward to starting this one! I’ve put both the audio and Kindle versions on hold but I think I’m going to need to eye-read this one.

  4. I’ll be really interested to hear what everyone else thinks about this book. It’s one of those weird but brilliant novels that I couldn’t stop thinking about. I’m actually glad that I bought this one so I can revisit it!
