On Veteran’s Day

November 11, 2020 By Carole

photo credit to Crystal Clear Photography

Later this morning I will be giving a speech on our Town Common. There won’t be a ceremony but it will be recorded and shared by our local cable company. I thought you might like to read what I’m going to say . . .

Greetings from the Board of Selectmen! It gives me great pleasure to wish the men and women of our country who served in our armed forces a Happy Veteran’s Day. Veteran’s Day looks a lot different this year than it has in the past but our appreciation for your sacrifice is as deep as ever. While we can’t gather to celebrate your service due to safety measures, thanks to creativity and modern technology, we can still honor our nation’s heroes.

I am not someone who has served in the military and I recognize that means I cannot fully understand the sacrifices our veterans have made. I don’t know what it takes to have the courage to leave home, to give up my personal freedom to follow a command, to be willing to sustain physical injury and emotional turmoil for the sake of people I don’t even know. But what I do know is this: this country would not be what it is were it not for our veterans. And what I want you to know is this: I see you. I honor your humanity. And I extend to you respect and recognition.

And so, on behalf of our town, thank you for your service. The sacrifices you made have given us freedom and security and our gratitude is immeasurable. Your unwavering service in peacetime and war, here in this nation and throughout the world, is respected and remembered and appreciated.  Thank you, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.

Happy Veteran’s Day.

No Walk Wednesday

November 4, 2020 By Carole

I don’t have photos of a walk to share with you this week. I blame the weather . . . it was extremely uncooperative. My opportunities for walking generally come on Wednesdays after work and Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Last Wednesday it rained. Last Friday it snowed. Last Saturday was very windy and cold. And Last Sunday it rained.

Sigh.

In the interest of accepting that there’s no bad weather just bad clothing, I will work on improving my supply of outdoor gear. In the meantime, yoga is my substitute for walking. The view isn’t as pretty but the way it makes me feel is just about as good. Mostly because Adriene.

In other news, I’m not talking about the election.

Here’s a pretty picture of some zinnias.

The end.

Walk With Me Wednesdays

October 28, 2020 By Carole

I’ve walked in 3 different locations since last week and I took photos of each to share with you.

First up: Down Back last Wednesday after work. The colors have changed so much in the last few weeks and I am really enjoying tracking those changes.

Next up: a walk in “Sean’s Woods” last Saturday. There is a trail behind his house that I have never explored even though I’ve lived in this town for over 23 years. We walked it together last week and it’s lovely. The cranbery bog at the end was being harvested and it’s always such a treat to see that happening.

I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating: those berries glistening in the sun remind me of rubies and I love to see them floating.

There were also structures in the woods, little lean-tos and several stone cairns piled on big rocks. I enjoy seeing the presence of others in the woods and this made me smile.

On Sunday, Dale and I took a drive to Duxbury. We found big fields with paths cut through the tall grasses that lead through some woods to a small beach. Here’s my guy taking a bit of a break while I went off to explore a little further.

The colors were muted and the clouds were moody.

It’s hard to imagine the heat and humidity of summer when the wind is blowing and the trees are about bare.

I hope you enjoyed these scenes from my walks this week. I enjoyed taking you along with me, that’s for certain.

Walk With Me Wednesday

October 21, 2020 By Carole

Several years ago my friend Judy, owner of Ball and Skein, started blogging about walks every Wednesday. I always enjoyed her photos and stories about being outside, often in the woods, and now I’m jumping on this bandwagon.

Dale and I have gotten in the habit of taking a Sunday afternoon drive and finding someplace outside to walk. It’s been a great way to get out of the house and see some beautiful foliage and get some movement into our day, too.

I took this photo two weeks ago. Our walk was along some powerlines in the woods and the colors were gorgeous. Dale can’t quite keep up with me entirely just yet but we’re managing. I sometimes get ahead of him and wait for him to catch up. And when he’s gone as far as his leg will tolerate, I head on without him and then circle back. The irony of me finally wanting to walk in the woods with him after he’s asked me to do this for years and him not being in an ideal condition to do this now that I’m interested is not lost on either of us.

Last Sunday we wound up at a conservation area in a nearby town. We had originally tried two other places which are well known and therefore were very crowded. As in, I looked out the window and said no way am I getting out of the car here. But these woods we found, rather by chance, were gorgeous. Perhaps, for me anyway, even magical as I stopped and paused and just . . . listened . . . to the falling leaves and subtle sounds of the woods that you can only hear when you are quiet.

A few weeks ago I was telling a friend that I hate walking. What I’ve discovered lately is that I hate walking on roads, sidewalks, and pavement. Turns out I love walking when I’m in the woods.
