A Knitting Mini-Break

May 12, 2005 By Carole

Remember how I titled my last entry “Librarians are Knitters, Too”? I know that it’s true. Pat and Lynda work with me and they are knitters. I have stumbled across knitting blogs created by librarians. I know they are out there. And yet, at the Massachusetts Library Conference, attending by over 550 librarians, I was the only one knitting. The. only. one. This did not particularly bother me but, honestly, I was a bit surprised. I felt a little self-conscious when I hauled out the knitting at my first workshop – Numerology (and not the New Agey exciting kind but rather the how-much-does-it-cost-to-catalog-a-book kind) – but I perservered and was glad for it. It definitely made the session time go faster and I got a lot done on the wildfoote sock.

After lunch I attended another session, this one about libraries and blogs and wikis and RSS. While I was waiting for things to start I pulled out the knitting and was surprised to have another librarian come rushing over to me. She had apparently been in the earlier session and had seen me knitting and wanted to know what I was working on. I showed her the sock (nearly to the toe decreases at this point) and she asked some questions about sock knitting, having never done one herself. I answered her questions and told her I was a little worried that the presenter would think I was being rude for knitting but she assured me that she didn’t think that was the case. At this point, Amy, the presenter for the current session, looked up and said, “Are you talking about knitting during this session? Please, feel free! If I could knit and give my talk at the same time, believe me, I would do it!” That put me completely at ease and I happily knitted away.

Until I noticed something. Something very scary. Something in fact quite horrifying. My yarn was almost gone. My yarn was almost gone and I still had to finish the rest of the foot and the toe decreases. I only bought 2 skeins of this yarn, one for each sock. I either had to rip out this sock and make the cuff and leg shorter or get more yarn. If I decided to get more yarn I wouldn’t be able to keep knitting during the session I was in because I was running out of yarn. I made an executive decision right then and there. I ripped out the sock and started over. Sigh.

By the time the sock was ripped out and re-cast the session was over. It was time for a beer break. I headed for the lounge and got myself a drink and waited for Amy. We hung out for a while and then she want to her last session of the day and I went up to the room to change my clothes and that’s when I took this picture.

I knit more on the second day of the conference and managed to get to the gusset decreases by the time everything was over. I did take the sock out to the beach since it was a beautiful day. Here’s a picture of the sock and surf.

Wildfoote_Sock_Beach.jpg

Nice, huh? I could definitely have hung around for another day or two. Alas, it was time to head home. I was greeted by a very pissed off Mason who chose to show his displeasure at my absence by attacking the 2 skeins of Lorna’s Laces. I spent the rest of last night de-tangling yarn. Blech.

Librarians are Knitters, Too

May 9, 2005 By Carole

When last we met I was raving about the Camp of Knitting Instruction. I was inspired. I was excited. I was ready to knit myself a beautiful Victorian Miser’s Purse.

I was nuts.

Do you know how long it would take to string 3,072 steel cut beads on to pearl cotton? Do you know how teeny size 0000 needles are? I was returned to reality with a resounding thud.

In a fit of desperation inspiration and to remind myself that there are doable knitting projects in my world, I went online and did some yarn shopping. My friends Missa and Jessica at Knit Pixie are now stocking Lorna’s Laces. Woo hoo! I got some of this:

Lorna's_Laces_1.jpg

and some of this:

Lorna's_Laces_2.jpg

Notice how lovely the yarn looks photographed outside in the perennial garden? Hey, I’ve learned a thing or two from Yarn Harlot.

Tomorrow I head to Falmouth for the Massachusetts Library Assocation Annual Conference. There will be meetings and conference-type things and lots of idle time and I’ve made a decision. It’s life-altering, this decision of mine. It’s time to come out of the closet and KIP with the librarians. I’ve always avoided knitting in library settings for fear of perpetuating the stereotype librarian weirdo thing. But, really, isn’t that being a tad redundant? Why should I be worried about being judged as a weirdo for knitting at a library conference? I’m already a weirdo just for attending a library conference. How much worse could it get?

I promise to knit at the conference and the travelling socks will be with me. With any luck it won’t be raining and I’ll have pictures of the socks at the beach.

Camp of Knitting Instruction

May 2, 2005 By Carole

The Civil War Camp of Instruction was a smashing success! I learned about 1860s etiquette, I made a period hairnet, I listened to a lecture on 19th century men’s civilian Summer clothing and 19th century women’s purses. You should see the knitted miser’s purse! It calls for 0000 needles and 3,072 steel cut beads. It’s beautiful and definitely going on the list! To see an example of what one of these babies looks like, click here and look at item #3. Go ahead, I’ll wait. Beautiful, huh?

I talked and visited and ate and drank and laughed and laughed and laughed. My friends (old and new) and I had a wonderful time and I can’t wait to do it again!

As for knitting, well, nothing goes together quite like Civil War camping and knitting. There’s not only plenty of time but it’s also period correct! When we left on Friday morning I was working on the heel flap of the purple jacquard sock. By Saturday evening the sock was finished. By Sunday morning I had started a new pair. The new socks are Lamb’s Pride Wildfoote and they will be for Hannah because she’s been whining about wanting socks made by mom. I have good reason for not knitting for Hannah (just ask me about the poncho she had to have and begged me to knit and wore only once) but I like this yarn and she will be eternally grateful (won’t you, sweetie?) so I’m doing it.

As promised, here are two pictures of the traveling sock in the exciting Civil War Camp of Instruction in Millis, Massachusetts. This is a picture from in front of my tent, where (yes, it’s true) I actually sleep.
Sock_tent.jpg

And this is a picture of the sock and it’s view of the camp from Officer’s Row.

While the sun may have been lacking (I sure hope this isn’t a trend) the company of special people made it a wonderful event!

And So It Begins

April 29, 2005 By Carole

Today we head out for our first “official” reenactment of the season and the whole family is very excited. (You will remember that Calvin Harlow Day at the beginning of the month was a washout. It was, in fact, the only washout in the last 45 days, but it was a washout nevertheless.) My 19th century clothing and cookware and knitting is packed. My cookies, cakes and pies are baked and I am ready for the adventure of Civil War reenacting.

Wendy (hi Wendy!) and I are supposed to be teaching a knitting class over the weekend to our fellow reenactors. I think hope they want to focus on socks, since that’s what I’m prepared for, but if not, well, we’ll just wing it. Wendy and I make a great team and we’ve done it before.

I promise to tell y’all about it on Monday. And, of course, I’ll have a picture of the traveling sock in the lovely town of Millis. Woo Hoo!

Socks A-Go-Go

April 28, 2005 By Carole

I know if I talk about Yarn Harlot again that y’all (she’s been in Memphis this week) will think I’m obsessed, but I can’t help myself. It’s about those traveling socks of hers. Last summer she had socks that traveled to New Foundland. Her socks have been to concerts with her super-cool music producer guy Joe and listened to Gordon Lightfoot music, her socks have been to Memphis and seen the freakin’ Elvis Presley statue. They have been to water parks and amusement parks and to a Prince concert and all over Toronto, for the love of wool. (I stole that expression from Yarn Harlot. Maybe I am obsessed.)

I cannot compete with this. I take my socks everywhere too, they make great traveling knitting. And, oh gee, my socks have been to, ummm, Carver, Millis and Uxbridge.

Last Friday they did go to Portsmouth, NH and that was pretty cool. Not cool by Yarn Harlot standards, but still cool.

I actually have a funny story about last Friday’s trip to Portsmouth. It was school vacation last week so I took Friday off to do something with Dale and Hannah. We had no definite plans, just the idea of doing something fun. We nixed the idea of going to the MFA to see the Ralph Lauren car exhibit when we realized that tickets were $22 each for adults. We nixed Newport and Slater Mill because it’s too early in the season. We were definitely at loose ends for plans, which is not like me (although it’s definitely like Dale) at all. So, Friday morning we’re making the bed and had a conversation that went something, but not exactly, like this:

Carole: I’m fresh out of ideas for today. Do you have any suggestions?
Dale: How about we go find some of those yarn shops you’re always talking about.
Carole: (stunned silence)
Dale: Honey? Are you okay? Honey? Get up off the floor, please.

I. Kid. You. Not. Dale suggested yarn shopping as the day’s excursion. I don’t know if he’s hoping to win a Husband of the Year award (yah. uh huh.) or if he was just hoping to get written about in the blog, but, honestly, his motivation for the suggestion is unimportant to me.
As soon as I recovered from the shock of it all, we headed for one of those yarn shops I’m always talking about.
