Read With Us: The John of John Discussion
The time has come to discuss Douglas Stuart’s latest book, John of John. Today on our blogs, Bonny and Kym and I are each posting questions about the book. You are welcome to answer questions in the comments, or mull over the questions today in preparation for the zoom tonight.
My question is this:
Several characters in John of John find themselves caught between what they feel they should do and what they actually want for themselves. Who do you think gives up the most out of a sense of duty or obligation? Do you think that sacrifice was worth it?

I felt the most for John (the father) in this book. I can only imagine the pain and stress of having to deny your true identity because you believe that you’ll go to hell if you don’t. I think Cal felt some of the stress, but the source was all from the fear of disappointing his father, and he had some spaces where he felt he could be himself.
I agree with Sarah in John (and Innis) giving up something significant. But, as I read this book the second time… it struck me that the entire community gave so much up… or perhaps it is better to say they repressed so much. I was struck that the lure to “return home” came with great consequences.
