Three On Thursday

This week I’ve got 3 random things running around in my head to share with you. It’s going to be a bit . . . stream of consciousness and maybe even a little whiny, I think . . . so buckle up.

  1. Dale is doing well. His leg is healing and PT comes twice a week and he is making progress. There is swelling in his foot and it’s a challenge to get him to lay down on the couch each day and raise it above his heart. He’s a guy who is generally very active and this forced inactivity isn’t easy for him. Other challenges include sleeping (we’ve switched sides in bed to protect his broken leg and I’ve adjusted to that easier than he has), showering in a chair without flooding the bathroom, and maneuvering through our very old house with the aid of a walker or wheelchair (I pick things up and put them down a lot). Still. It’s pretty much all good, particularly when I consider the other scenarios I could be facing.
  2. I am discovering daily just how much work Dale did around this house. Because he spent several hours at home each day while I was at work he did the laundry and emptied the dishwasher. He also took care of all things outside like trash and recycling, filling the bird feeders, and pretty much all of the yard work. He got heavy stuff for me. He cleaned up the kitchen after dinner. And, he took pretty good care of himself, too. Now I am doing all of my own stuff plus all of his stuff plus doing the things he can’t do to care for himself. In other words, I am tired.
  3. We discovered on Tuesday that the freezer in our garage stopped working. It had only happened a short time before we realized it, thankfully, so most everything was able to be saved. My immediate thought was, no big deal, I’ll just call our local appliance store and have them deliver a new one. Well, friends, guess what? Freezers are the new toilet paper. That’s right, there isn’t a freezer to be found as apparently they are in great demand during a pandemic. I’m not sure I understand the logic in that but it does put us in the rather unfortunate situation of having to replace something we’ve always had and being unable to do so because now all the cool kids (see what I did there?) want to have a freezer.

And that’s where I’m at this Thursday. Finding time each day to write a blog post is still a little challenging so if you don’t always see a new post from me, please don’t worry, just know that I’m busy and occasionally overwhelmed.

If you wrote a post for today please include your link below and thanks for joining in this Thursday!

  1. You’ve got to be kidding–Freezers. Of course. The space you’re in reminds me of when my husband shredded his Achilles and had 38 staples, ,and for some reason he didn’t respond to painkillers. We had a newborn and 2 other kids at the time and no family to help. I hustled, and I tried, but when we all hobbled in to church one Sunday and our minister put her arm around me and asked, “So. How are YOU doing?” I just started to weep. I said, “The truth? It’s so hard.” And she said, “Believe it or not, it’s the truth I was after.” I will never forget that moment, being seen in my support role. I guess I just want you to know you are not alone. And I know that the days that feel hard are so damn hard. Especially when it’s so sudden and–add to that, a bizarre-o state of the world. Thinking of you and hoping a freezer is delivered ASAP.

  2. Did no one tell you? Freezers are where everyone hides their toilet paper. It’s like that fake soup can in the pantry for your egg money. Ha! It’s crazy how complicated even simple things are these days. Sometimes you have to to choose laugh, cry, or curse, before you press on. Do be OPEN to help. Accept help from your kids getting the yard work done. They can do that without exposure to more people and they are probably just wondering how to help. Let people bring you meals, you can use the extra time not cooking and cleaning up for other tasks, including resting or planning. It’s hard but you know we’re here for you too.

  3. I guess a run on freezers makes sense, what with everyone hoarding food. Did you know that bicycle sales are also way up? We’d gotten kiddo a new bike before all this started, but my husband and I have bought bikes since we’ve been home, too, so that we can all go out riding together. Anyway, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that a new freezer comes your way before too long (any chance some neighbors could spare some freezer space in the meantime?).

I’m glad to hear that Dale’s recovery is going well. And I’m sure it is thoroughly exhausting for you. Keep reminding yourself that it isn’t forever — and maybe sit down and take a snooze with him when you can!

  4. Oy. But of course there’s been a run on freezers. So much fail.

I know you want to support local businesses, but have you tried Home Depot or Lowes? I checked Home Depot’s website this morning and the Brockton store has freezers in stock with free delivery.

I am so glad that Dale is improving (even though it is not on the pace he’d like!) And my suggestions for you include finding an amazing neighborhood kid who’d like to mow the yard, or fill the bird feeders, or take out the trash and recycling for a little bit of money.

Sending you both all the love! XO

  5. I’m glad to hear that Dale is doing well and you are both adapting, slowly but surely. And freezers. I have spent the last day and a half on the phone looking for them and I can tell you that there are none between here and Iowa. John needs two to store samples in for a study being done in Iowa. Lowes and Home Depot show them as available with delivery at the end of June. When I called to see if earlier delivery was a possibility, they laughed and said don’t even believe the June delivery date. Their delivery/tracking software only goes out 30 days, so it just fills in that date by default. They didn’t anticipate having freezers in the warehouse for actual delivery until August/September. I thought I found one in Nebraska but it turned out to be a non-working floor sample at Sears. I do wish you better luck than I had!

  6. Freezers are the new toilet paper? Who could predict these things? Your post doesn’t sound whiny at all. We are allowed to share difficulties with blogger friends. I do it all the time. I am glad to read that Dale is doing well. I have thought about how much Bill (my hubby) does around the house. I can’t even imagine mowing our very hilly yard. Or opening a pickle jar. Or scratching the itch in the middle of my own back. We are lucky to have them around.

  7. Keep breathing.
    Deep, deep breaths.
You’re in the weeds now, but you’ll get through this.
Because you are STRONG and you can do hard things.
    XOXOXO
    (Freezers. Sheesh.)

  8. I’m glad to hear Dale is moving in the right direction. I understand you must be tired. Just reading your list hits home about all that Doug does around here. Good luck with the freezer. Maybe through the grapevine one of your friends will have one unplugged that they haven’t used in years. Fingers crossed! xo

  9. Darn, I wish we lived closer… I have a little chest freezer that I’d bring right over!

Rusty often goes on trips for weeks at a time (sometimes a month or more) and, similar to Dale, he is home more than me and does A LOT, especially outside stuff. Boy howdy, that’s a wake up call, huh?

I’m so glad that he’s doing well!!

  10. So glad Dale is healing well (even if too slow for his liking). And freezers – yeah. Fletch had called a local mom & pop appliance store we use and they laughed when he asked about freezers – saying maybe in August or September (and that was 6-8 weeks ago)!

  11. Oh Carole, my heart goes out to you. I know it’s a struggle but hang in there. Dale is recovering and will be back to his old self eventually. My only suggestion for you is to lower your standards. My husband broke his back when our kids were 2 months and not quite 2 years old. The only way to survive is to lower those standards. Not being as physically active as normal, Dale probably isn’t as dirty as normal so replace a couple of showers with a sponge bath. Set him in a lawn chair outside to wash his hair so he’s not making a mess in the shower. Stop dusting and vacuum three or four times less often. Use plastic/paper cups. Don’t even bother recycling. Toss it all into one container and forget the environment for a couple of weeks. Your sanity is more important. I know I’m about to get yelled at for that statement but …. Reality check. Your health and sanity are more important. You can’t care for Dale properly if you are too tired and you can’t care for either of you if you are too stressed. It’s like the airline motto of putting your own oxygen mask on first. Oh and don’t forget – your crock pot will be your best friend and there is nothing wrong with canned soup and a peanut butter sandwich for dinner 4 nights a week. It’s not exciting, but a month or so of it will not kill you.

As for the freezer, Lowes (do you have Lowes where you are??) Had a huge stock of refridgerator/freezers last week when we were shopping for a new fridge. I didn’t pay attention the the freezer-only situation but…

Hang in there. It will get better.

  12. That was not whiney, it was real life and you’ve got a heaping helping. Hang in there! Let your house be messy (or your yard) or whatever you can let go of — use paper plates, just lighten your load so you can take care of yourself as well as Dale.
    No freezers?! Crazy.
    xox

  13. I’m glad ale is feeling better. I didn’t know freezers were in short supply. We are trying to clean ours out since this all started. We obviously never go to the bottom as their was a lot of old, really old frozen food down there. Now to tackle the regular freezer to see how old some of that stuff is.

Hope things get easier for you. My father hurt his knee a few years ago and my sister and I realized things that he did that we didn’t even know about.

  14. When this pandemic started Smith told me freezers (and generators) were flying out of HD. Now, it’s anything to do with a garden. Doing all the hard labor in a house can be tricky at best. You not only have extra work around the house (including heavy lifting), you also have Dale. That’s a lot of extra! Smith does much of the same things Dale does and I can’t imagine what it would be like if I didn’t have his help. Take care, friend. I wish I could be there to help!

  15. I am glad Dale is recovering well. I like Kat’s advice to find someone to help with the outdoor work. After my husband’s knee replacement, I realized how much we are a team and how grateful I was to be married to him. Having all the responsibility is a load but it will get better. Take good care of yourself.
