Camping, August 2025

We had a great week of camping and did all of our favorite camping things.

We hung out at the beach, although not as much as we would have liked since the beginning of the week was too cold. The weather got warmer as the week went on, though, and we managed several afternoons reading, swimming, and enjoying the pond. I even tried Hannah’s stand up paddleboard with, albeit limited, success. Truthfully, I’m best at sitting on the thing but I am able to keep it stable while kneeling and I even stood up twice before face planting into the water. I’m determined to get better at this!

We had campfires most every night. Some nights we cooked hot dogs over the fire for dinner. Other nights it was just s’mores. It always involves good conversation and great vibes. I’m a big fan of starting the fire as early in the day as possible just for the atmosphere of it.

We always rent a golf cart at this particular campground. It’s a really big area and the golf cart helps with carting stuff back and forth to the beach. It’s also really fun to just ride around and check out other campsites and rigs and take in the scenery. There’s a large cranberry bog on the edge of one side of the campground and the sunsets there each night are beautiful.

Fred and George adjusted to the camping lifestyle once again. They loll around on our bed in the camper like the hyenas on Pride Rock, if you know that imagery. I also got them this sort of playpen so that they could come outside with us. I’m not sure if they loved it or not but they did get used to it and by the end of the trip they would lay down and chill but they never felt comfortable enough to actually sleep.

Our camper is pretty modest compared to some of the rigs we saw. It works for us, though. Something a little roomier, which a slide out for width, would be ideal but upgrading our camper means upgrading Dale’s truck so that we can tow something heavier and I’m not sure we’re at that point yet. For now it’s a cozy space and that’s feels just right.

Cheers to a good week of camping and the peace and contentment it always brings me.

  1. What a wonderful week! I’ve only tried a stand up paddleboard once, and it was in the place that sold them. I imagine it would be a little different on the water. 😉

  2. Sounds like a terrific week. It seems like upgrading a home on wheels is just like the fixed ones. Once you do one thing, something else needs to be upgraded too. Although Fred and George seem to have upgraded pretty nicely. Clearly, far too many new sights and sounds outside to nap!

  3. What a fabulous week Carole. Love all your pictures. I would not even attempt a paddle board! (Balance is not a strong point for me). When Fletch and I were camping we always enjoyed walking around to see other campers – some of them are monsters!! I can’t imagine driving one or pulling one. I love that Fred and George join you and Dale on your camping adventures.

  4. I’m so glad you had a lovely time camping, Carole. The bad thing about checking out other people’s “rigs” (just like other people’s “cabins”) is that it always seem to make us want . . . more . . . when what we already have is really just what we need. Love that George and Fred can accompany you on your camping journeys. They look so curious there . . . in their personal camping playpen! I hope you can bring some of your camping peace and contentment back to your “regular life” this week. XO

  5. PS – We had a SUP at the lake for years, and I eventually got to the point where I could stand up and paddle across the lake. It is WAY harder than it looks, and it is beyond me how people DO YOGA ON THE THINGS!!! I think it’s more a . . . start-when-you’re-young thing . . . because my kids have no trouble just whipping around the lake on it. In fact, we gave the SUP to Brian and Lauren to use on their own lake!

  6. What a fantastic week, Carole! I am so glad the weather was perfect for you all. But I think my favorite photo ever is Fred and George in that playpen! They look like they are not too sure about this all… and where’s the bed? LOL (I also LOVED your IG post yesterday about your Friday journal posts! That is just genius!!)

  7. Looks like a very zen week to me. I haven’t camped in a long time, but the nature dose always really made me feel great. Paddle board – nah! Reading in a chair on the beach – YAY! I did not realize Fred and George were such different sizes. I think that is the first time I have seen a pic of them standing next to each other. Take your moments of zen with you and hang on to them as long as possible.

  8. What a lovely week — even with cooler weather to start, I’m sure you had plenty of fun and/or relaxation! Kai is out camping with Kate for the first time, as we speak — in a TENT! Curious to see how it goes (as of last evening, OK!).

  9. What fun! We had a pop up camper when I was a kid and went every year the week ending with Labor Day as school started after it then. I was 6 months old the first time and I got sick and they had to go home. The last trip we took I was 19 and we had tents then and we went to the Cape. All fun times but we also had a cottage at a lake where we spent the rest of the summer.

  10. Sorry the weather wasn’t better, but it sounds like you still made the best of the time. I’ll admit I’m laughing a bit at the cats — I’m not sure I’d relax if I were in that playpen, either. They can see all that space to explore but can’t get out to do it!
