Three On Thursday

Welcome to another random Thursday three things post . . .

  1. It’s been almost 3 weeks since Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl album was released and I’m still listening and humming along. In fact, I wake up with an earworm from that album in my head every day. Sometimes it’s the title track. Sometimes it’s the bridge from Eldest Daughter or Father Figure. I randomly shout, Elizabeth Taylor throughout the day. Remember back to The Tortured Poets Department album when she said, “I put narcotics into all of my songs and that’s why you’re still singing along”? I think she really does
  2. I made sourdough bread this week in a totally different way than I normally did and it might be a game changer. I mixed the dough before work, did one set of stretch and folds, and then left the bowl in my dining room all day. I thought it might be proofed when I got home but it wasn’t, it was still pretty cold. So I moved it into the living room near the gas fireplace and left it there. It wasn’t ready when I went to bed so I left it overnight. In the morning it was soft and had risen some so I shaped it and put it into a banneton and stuck it i the fridge. I baked it after work yesterday and it came out great. This was almost completely hands off and I managed to fit the whole process in despite being gone at work. That means I can bake sourdough much more frequently than I had been.
  3. Last year I bought a few advent calendars. One for Dale and I, one for Patrick and one for Jackie. This year I have ordered one for everyone in the immediate family and they have started to arrive. I think it’s a fun way to move through the holiday season. Mine (and Patrick’s) is the Nespresso coffee one. Dale’s is the Bonne Maman tiny jams one. I am excited to hand these out to everyone in the next few weeks.

And that’s all I’ve got for you today. Have a great day and just think – it’s almost the weekend!

  1. Advent calendars sound like fun! Thanks for that idea. Colin makes sourdough bread typically each week. Seems like a lot of work to me, but it sure is good. And, he is so used to doing it, it’s routine for him. Glad you have discovered an easier way to make it!

  2. I am ready to get back into sourdough baking now that the weather has cooled. In fact, I just ordered some flour from my favorite vendor this morning. I think you have found the secret to the best flavor and ease of making sourdough. It requires time and patience, but you are well rewarded! I don’t think it would take that long to proof at my house, but your house may be cooler than mine. Advent calendars do sound like fun.

  3. I don’t know anything about TS and her music, but I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Baking bread around your schedule sounds like a good idea, as do Advent calendars. I used to love them when I was young, so maybe I’ll look for one today.

  4. I love advent calendars, though I don’t give them every year. When my two were young adults, I tried to send something, to make where ever they were feel more like home. Lately, it’s only occasionally, if inspired.

  5. Have you seen the jigsaw puzzle advent calendars? Trying to decide which one together for my parents to enjoy. They’re old enough they don’t get out to as many holiday gatherings as they used to, so I thought something new to look forward to might be fun.

  6. I’ve also been waking up with TS earworms most days! And that’s without actively listening — I just hear it so often because of my daughter. Not that I’m complaining; I like the new album a lot!

I am determined to learn to bake sourdough in 2026, so I’m glad to hear you’ve had success with a mostly hands-off method.
