Taking my cue from Kym this week, here are 3 simple things that are making…
Three On Thursday

Let’s do another random Thursday, shall we?
- I’m sure you’re all aware that SNAP benefits are set to be suspended on November 1st, creating what is likely to be a massive food insecurity situation for our country. I won’t get into the politics of this (but you know where I stand) but I will encourage you to consider making a monetary donation to your local food pantry. Yes, you can buy food and donate it to them but money is preferred since they have purchasing power that the average consumer does not have. If you really want to donate food instead, I recommend checking with the first to see what they need. After working directly with the food pantry as part of my Council on Aging gig for 10 years, I can almost guarantee you that it isn’t canned pumpkin.
- I have an underbed storage container full of high heeled shoes. I haven’t worn any of them in years although I did wear them regularly back in the day. They are taking up space and it’s silly to hold on to them and yet I can’t bring myself to let them go. I’m not sure if it’s the memories attached to them or the nostalgia or just not wanting to admit that I’m now too old to wear ridiculous shoes, but there’s something caught up in this that I need to unpack.
- Halloween is tomorrow and we’ve been watching movies appropriate to the season but not the scary ones I used to crave. Lately it’s been all about Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic and Halloweentown. Gone are the days when I could watch Night of the Living Dead or the original Halloween movie with Jamie Lee Curtis. Dale still loves those and I know he’s kind of bummed that I’m not into them anymore. I will probably put on Halloween tomorrow night but I won’t be paying much attention, I can tell you that. I’d actually prefer Young Frankenstein at this point in my life!
Have a great Thursday, friends.

I donate to my local food bank regularly. I can’t believe we let people go hungry in this country! As for the shoes, I understand, but I have lately begun to admit to myself that keeping them is ridiculous for me. YMMV I no longer work in a job that requires it, and I never will again. I do not have social get togethers that require it, and I never will again. I never enjoyed wearing them anyway. I looked good, but I suffered for it. My feet are more important than those shoes! And lastly, I think it was all about admitting that I am getting old and those events are in the rearview these days. So I let go of all those heels and tortuous shoes, but I kept all the flats! Tee hee Lastly, I have so many things that are really scary IRL these days, I do not need to seek ways to be scared. Good random post, Carole.
It took me a while to let go of the size 8 and 10 nice clothes, suits, and shoes I used to wear for work, but I donated them to a thrift shop here that provides outfits for women returning to work. I was still working, just not wearing those sizes any more and it was quite freeing!
And I agree with Becky; real life is quite scary these days. No scary movies for me!
Funny, I was just thinking of pulling together a donation for our local food pantry. Adding a monetary donation is a wonderful idea – thank you!! I got rid of almost all my high heels when I retired. My feet are a mess and I never really felt good wearing them anyway. I have saved a. pair or two “in case” which I’m sure won’t happen. I should free up the space! Like Becky there is enough scary stuff IRL…no need to add a scary movie. Happy Halloween!!
I was never into heels the way some women enjoy them, and owne several pairs of flats too. When we moved twice in a year due to renovations, I kept two pair of flats and an all purpose pair of heels for the occasional funeral, wedding, etc. It is nice to have the space, even if it’s empty.
As Lucy VanPelt would say, “Cash, cold hard cash!” is our monthly donation to our local food bank. An internet friend was a food bank director and once she explained how much farther cash goes it was a no brainer. If we had young kids, we would also shop together and donate that because it’s a more accessible concept. And when I clean out my pantry, anything we aren’t going to use does get donated. I’ve heard food banks are also hoping for extra volunteers while their services are in higher demand.
I would wholeheartedly agree with making a cash donation to your local food pantry, but I would temper that with this caveat… what are the food bank requirements for a person in need of food. If the requirements are so restrictive that they don’t actually provide the support for the needs of the community… find a better food pantry!
Good luck with that high heeled shoe thing… but I will say this, letting go is so freeing!
Long time monthly (cash) food bank donor here! We also contribute to food drives all the time. Our local food pantry publishes a list of all the items they particularly need, and I try to keep close to that. As far as the shoes? Let them go, my friend. Once you get started getting rid of them, it just gets easier. I always “fight” myself when it comes to giving away some categories of things (my dressy clothes from days gone by, for example) (which I will NEVER wear again), but once I get started . . . it’s so freeing that I just go ALL IN! As for movies . . . I’ve never been a fan of scary movies — even when I was young. But I’ll watch Young Frankenstein every year!
I have to check out my local food pantrys. I cleaned out my shoes after we became permanently work from home. I also developed arthritis in my knees and any shoes that my knees hurt the next day were donated or are only for quick grocery trips if I like them too much to let them go. The original Halloween has always been my favority (the knitting needles as a weapon) but can only watch it during the day and only watched parts this year, maybe with the sound off as the music doesn’t help. I have been watching Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Monsters Inc (I blame the great nieces for this one as one was Sully one year for Halloween and had a Sully bday party). I have watched parts of Cruella this year and Practical Magic.
Thank you for this timely reminder about local food banks. We wrote a check to ours and I felt a little guilty about not going to the ‘effort’ to get food but now I feel much better about giving $!
Yes to donating to a local food pantry. I still have a few heels but I let most go a few years ago. My style has changed and I made myself try them in and found many were uncomfortable. I have never liked scary movies so I skip them all.
I can understand not wanting to let go of some clothes, just in case, but I’ve found it freeing to give those clothes away to someone who will actually wear them. Do you have Dress for Success or a similar program in your area? I’m sure someone would be appreciative of those heels when you’re willing to part with them!
It’s payday today, so I’m going to be donating to our local food pantry and food bank. A church in our neighborhood also has what looks like a Little Free Library but it’s for food, so I might drop some nonperishables there as well. It’s disgusting that in a country as rich as ours, there are people going hungry.
