First of all, here's the headshot. I don't love it, but I don't hate it…
Three On Thursday

Should be just call it Random Thursday at this point?
- Thanksgiving prep is underway. Not because I host a big crowd (there will be 8 of us, I think) but because it makes it easier and it’s also fun. Yesterday I got turkey wings to make stock and gravy. I also prepared 4 batches of pie crust, enough to make 2 apple pies (one is for Friendsgiving), a pumpkin, a cranberry pecan, and a chocolate cream. I listened to Christmas music while I did this and it made it feel festive and fun. Don’t judge me.
- I find myself joining the world of fountain pen users. And let me tell you, this is a slippery slope. I started with 2 cheap Kakuno pens. Then I went to a stationary store last weekend and picked up two TWSBI Eco pens. These are a little more spendy but still reasonable. I also got some gorgeous ink, Diamine oxford blue and Sailor Tea Tree. I now have a wish list of more pens and inks that is growing daily. Send help.
- I made a TikTok yesterday with 3 holiday book recommendations and it’s performing well so I thought I’d share it here but also tell you what the 3 books are that I chose: Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan, Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher, and A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote.
Have a great Thursday!

All good random things, Carole. I have several fountain pens, and I love how they write, but I have found myself using them less and less as time goes on. I think I just don’t want to fool with them much anymore. You are always on the ball with Thanksgiving prep, so I am not surprised that you are ahead of the curve! I have read the first 2 books, but I am not familiar with the 3rd. I am going to look that one up.
Go you on Thanksgiving prep! I plan to make an orange-cranberry sauce this weekend and also Fletcher’s Mom’s Cranberry Chutney. Thursday morning (Thanksgiving day) I will make a pie. I’m going to try a Praline Pumpkin Pie which (hopefully) will be a combination of pumpkin and pecan. Two in one! Other folks are doing the balance of the cooking which makes it easy for me. Thanks for the book recommendations. I’ve read Small Things and a Christmas Memory, but had forgotten about Winter Solstice. I remember my Dad using fountain ens for years and years. I never got the hang of them!
If something brings you joy (fountain pens, special ink, Christmas music, Taylor Swift, WHATEVER it may be), then do it and enjoy it without hesitation! Who gives a flying f*** what other people think! ENJOY without worry of judgment!!! And that’s all I have to say about that! XOXO
I’m not starting pies until next week, but I’m only making two and apple crisp. I’m like Becky with fountain pens. I fell down the rabbit hole a while ago and got two pens and ink, but I probably haven’t used them in a couple of years. They’re not great for grocery lists or writing out the checks to pay taxes and I don’t write much else. But I bet you’ll use them plenty for journaling. Great Christmas book recs!
My book club is reading Small Things Like These, I am looking forward to reading it. Have a great Thanksgiving.
I am in favor of doing whatever brings you joy, and if that’s listening to Christmas music, go for it — just don’t make me listen to it yet! I always look forward to seeing your pies.
Welcome to the Fountain Pen Nirvana! There is something quite special about a freshly inked pen and a blank page! (My favorites remain Visconti, Conklin, and my trusty Kaweco AL Sport… they are on the spendier side, but they write consistently and the Kaweco is very very portable!!) (Have you discovered Goulet Pens? They are wonderful enablers and JetPens has some great prices as well!)
When I read about the pens, I came down to recommend JetPens — they also sell my favorite mechanical pencil, the Uni Kura Toga.
