Three On Thursday

Three things about what I’ll be doing over the next few days  . . .

  1. Today is the first day of the annual Massachusetts Municipal Association Conference in Boston. It’s held in the Seaport now, which is a lively area, but it’s different than the Back Bay where everything we attended was located inside and connected. Venturing out to restaurants for receptions isn’t as appealing when the temperatures are in the single digits and the wind chill is below zero. Still, we shall muddle through and connect with colleagues and consume free drinks and food wherever possible.
  2. Any time I attend one of these events I struggle with imposter syndrome. I question why I am there, I hesitate to seek out acquaintances because I fear they won’t remember me, and I retreat to my hotel room instead of challenging myself to try a new experience. This time, I am reminding myself that I belong in this space, that I serve on the damn board of the MMA (a position I had to apply for and go through an interview process that was rather rigorous), and (at the advice of a mentor I have on TikTok) I am reminding myself that most of those other elected officials don’t have almost 19K followers on social media.
  3. There is a “head shot station” in the trade show where attendees can go and get a professional head shot taken for free. I am in dire need of a new head shot and I am going to force myself to get this done at some point this weekend. It’s most definitely out of my comfort zone and I’m doing it anyway.

Wish me well!

  1. Carole, YOU’VE GOT THIS! I mean it… (and I bet you are also nicer than many of the others in attendance!!) I can’t wait to hear about your adventures! XO

  2. I believe in you Carol and know you’ve got this. Looking forward to seeing the new head shot!

  3. You”ll be great! I think the temperatures might be the most difficult thing about this weekend. Stay warm and just be yourself!

  4. No doubt in my mind you’ll do great. And, it’s pretty much your job to be there, so how can you be an imposter? Hope the head shot is amazing!

  5. You, GO! Get that new head shot! Trudge out in the cold to meet up with your colleagues! Make connections! You absolutely deserve to be there (even if you had zero followers on TikTok). Enjoy!

  6. You are a rock star Carole! We cant wait to see that headshot! Bundle up and have a great time!

  7. Goodness, librarians have always been some of the most helpful and kindest people I’ve met. Even if they don’t remember you (unlikely), they will welcome you into the conversation. Who knows? They might be feeling similarly and delighted you remembered them. That Board member thing? Well earned. If it helps, think of the socializing and networking asan extension of the position instead of putting yourself out there only as Carole. But I’m betting you go, meet and re-meet great people and have delicious food and drink. You are on your own about the weather though, although that sort of thing can add an extra layer of camaraderie.

  8. GO YOU!!! Have a fabulous time and enjoy it all (well, maybe not the freezing temps…). Can’t wait to hear all about it!
