OLW: Delight, That’s a Wrap

My journey with Delight this year did not follow my typical path. I pretty much abandoned the Ali Edward’s stuff about 6 months into the year. No shade to Ali and her team, I think it’s just gotten stale for me after so many years of similar content. Around the same time, I stopped doing monthly updates here on the blog. That’s totally on me although I think the lack of structure I gave myself by not doing Ali’s prompts was a pretty big factor with regards to this.

Thankfully, despite dropping the ball on documenting this year’s word in a way you all could see, it was actually a pretty great word for me. I can honestly say that I thought about this word pretty much every day . . . looking for moments of delight, noting when they appeared, and reminding myself that while delight may be fleeting, it often shows up when I need it most.

I thought about delight a lot during our home renovation project. It was a challenging time for me as I loath upheaval and disturbance and everything about our house was pretty chaotic for quite a while. I was able to find delight in the gratitude I felt for the work being done and the people doing it. In the small kindnesses of the clean up they did every day in an attempt to disrupt our lives as little as possible. In the effort Dale put in every single day to move things around, straighten things out, all in order to provide me with a place to relax and feel at home as much as was possible. Delight definitely showed up for me then, even when I had to dig deep for it.

I finished the year strong with 100 days of delight, documenting a moment of delight each day in my journal. Some were silly, like laughing with my library book club group. Some were meaningful, noting the morning sun shining through the changing leaves in our backyard. Some were simple, like finding bumblebees sleeping in my dahlias. And some were comforting, like reading by the fire with a cat in my lap. All spark a memory of a special moment of delight.

I’m grateful for this word, delight, as it helped me focus on the small moments that might otherwise go unnoticed, but that truly make up a year in the life.

  1. I think the best words are ones that move into your life and make a permanent place there. Delight was the perfect word for you in 2024 no matter how it showed up here (or even that it didn’t!) I’ve been thinking about Ali Edwards and her OLW classes … wondering how she can keep doing it year in and year out?!

  2. There were times this year when it was hard to find and take note of delight, but it sounds like this was a good word for you. And in doing so, I think you may have helped me find several things to delight in, especially when I needed them most!

  3. I agree that it is noticing the small things that can make a difference in our lives and in our attitudes. I think Delight was a good word for you Carole. I’ll be curious to see/read if you pick a word for 2025.

  4. I think your noting delight in small ways was just brilliant, Carole! And a good reminder that delight is there if we look for it!

  5. You could not have predicted how dark this year would end up being at the start, which makes your choice of word even more extraordinary. Even in the face of some Very Bad Stuff, you were focused on the beautiful, the fun, the happy. Delight was such a great word, and I have a feeling you’re going to continue to take notice of it in your life even after this year is in the past!

  6. Having “delight” hovering in the background of 2024 – however you chose to “document” it (or not) – was really beneficial for you – and that’s all that really matters. I think the most valuable thing about choosing a word is how it just . . . winds its way into everything else in our lives. And often, silently. The documenting is something . . . extra . . . we may (or may not) choose to do. It doesn’t minimize how our words impact us!

Looking for delight . . . is always a good thing, and I’ve enjoyed watching it show up for you all year long. XO
