One Little Word: Fearless, March 2025

When I chose this word I did not think about the obvious meaning that many of you have pointed out to me over the last 3 months. You know the one – that moment where you feel the fear and do it anyway. That’s a valid definition of this word but it’s not the meaning I want to explore.

This word, for me, is about taking chances. It’s about making a leap into the unknown. Throwing caution to the wind. Plunging headfirst into something without considering the consequences because it just feels right.

It’s about doing all of those things in the pursuit of joy instead of being stuck in the feeling of fear. Ya know?

It’s about this:

I’m not sure I’ve done a great job of exploring this yet but it’s always in the back of my mind, particularly as I consider my future. Running for office again. Writing a book. Retiring from the library. I want to consider those options with a mindset of seeking joy, not feeling fear.

That is the journey, my friends.

That is what being fearless means to me.

  1. I love this, Carole! Going forward because there will be joy… not being stymied by the fear of the unknown… the what if’s… the uncertainty. I am excited to see where your journey takes you this year! XO

  2. I hope that you make the decisions that bring you the most joy, but you can always decide to change your mind, except maybe about retirement. But I did change my mind, and I went back to work twice!

  3. I love that you’re embracing the “what if it turns out great?” side of this. I have a feeling many (if not most) of us fear the unknown because we think first of the possible bad outcomes, but really we should be thinking of the great things and enormous joy that might be waiting for us!
