Three on Thursday

I’m here today with 3 recommendations to entertain you . . .

  1. The Netflix series No Good Deed. This came out last December and Dale and I just binged it last week. It’s great – fast paced and suspenseful without being too serious. Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow are great as empty nesters who have decided to downsize and the supporting cast is equally terrific.
  2. The podcast The Recipe with Kenji and Deb. As in, Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen, one of my favorite food bloggers. Now, in full disclosure, I have only listened to the trailer and not any of the episodes but I’ve heard great things about it and the subjects of each episode sound wonderful: burgers, eggs benedict, French toast, broccoli cheddar soup and more.
  3. The book The Names by Florence Knapp. I just finished it yesterday and it’s probably the best book I’ve read all year. I know several of you have already read it and also loved it. If it’s not in your TBR, please add it right now. It’s clever and unique without feeling contrived, the writing is tight, and the characters are amazing. It’s Knapp’s first novel and I can’t imagine how she will top it.

What would you recommend to me for entertainment right now?

  1. I am so glad you liked The Names as well! I thought it was fantastic writing as well! I am eager to see where she goes with her next novel (and I really hope there will be a next novel!!) I am adding No Good Deed to the queue… thanks for the recommendation!

  2. I’ve wanted to re-read The Names ever since I first read it and that might happen this weekend. I’m currently reading an ARC entitled Finding Grace and I’ve found myself resenting have to make dinner and blanch more vegetables because that takes me away from it. It’s different and unlike anything else I’ve read before. I won’t say too much because I’m afraid I’ll give away some crucial points, but it’s published next Tuesday if you want to take a look at it.

  3. I’m in the queue (longish, but moving) for The Names. The other two sound great – thanks. And, have a wonderful weekend – Happy 4th!!

  4. Thanks for the recommendations, Carole. I have not watched a lot of things that I really liked in a while. We seem to be in a lull of new releases. I did watch CODA recently, and I really enjoyed it. Have lots of books on my TBR list, but the wait list at the library – oof!

  5. I just finished The Names last night… and that book is headed straight for the shelf, ready for the eventual re-read (& available to anyone else who’d like to crack it open).

We’ve been watching Pokerface — it’s a little goofy, but good summertime watching. We also really enjoyed Dept Q!

  6. I have yet to hear of someone who has read The Names and not loved it! It really is impressive as a first novel! Did you ever listen to the Home Cooking podcast during the pandemic? Might be worth a listen if you like food stuff. Definitely going to check out The Recipe — thanks for that recommendation!

  7. Great recommendations, Carole. I’ll have to see if I can get Tom interested in No Good Deed. He saw it promoted on Netflix and just . . . sailed on past. And The Names. It’s SO good. XO

  8. In the middle of listening to The Names…SO GOOD!!! No recommendations…thanks for yours! 🙂
