Ten On Tuesday

March 15, 2011 By Carole

Yesterday was 3/14 and that means it was Pi day. Or pie day. It’s no secret that I love pie. I love to eat pie and even more than that I love to make pie. A day to celebrate pie is my kind of day, which brings me to this week’s topic, 10 Favorite Kinds of Pie.

  1. Blueberry. It’s my absolute favorite, warm from the oven with vanilla ice cream.
  2. Banana Cream. I make the vanilla pudding from scratch and it’s heavenly. It’s also Dale’s favorite.
  3. Chocolate Cream. I use Cook ‘n Serve pudding for this because honestly, I can’t tell the difference between that and my own chocolate pudding. The homemade whipped cream and chocolate shavings on top make it extra special.
  4. Pumpkin. I have to have it at Thanksgiving.
  5. Pecan. I usually make Cranberry Pecan because it’s Hannah’s favorite but I actually prefer plain ole pecan.
  6. Lemon Meringue. I have never actually made one of these but my mom made it regularly and I loved it.
  7. Chicken Pot Pie. Not all pie is for dessert!
  8. Peanut Butter. It’s rich and decadent and loaded with chocolate and peanut butter – almost like a giant Reese’s.
  9. Peach. Peeling the fruit is a pain but it’s worth it when the peaches are fresh because a slice of this is like a slice of sunshine.
  10. Cherry. I used to make a wonderful cherry pie for our reenactments and the soldiers would line up for a slice. Nothing is better than sharing homemade pie with those who love it!

Happy Day After Pi Day!

this was a fun list! I included chicken pot pie, too – agree 100% that savory pies are delicious too! and your cranberry pecan pie sounds so good!

Funny how life changes. When I was teaching Pi day was a big deal in math class. If not for this post I would have totally forgotten the significance of this date. 20 years of rituals lost in 3! Yummy pie list… is it too late to celebrate!

Blueberry pie tops my list too. Next come apple and rhubarb – mmmmm. Pie!

I’m so glad you included chicken pot pie in your list! It’s one of my favorites, too. Also – thank you for keeping this Ten on Tuesday idea going… I love it!

Pi Day– what a great idea! We had a great pumpkin bourbon pie at Thanksgiving. Other favorites are key lime, tarte tatin, and my mother’s mincemeat – a now lost recipe.

Mmmmm, delicious list! So many similarities again 🙂 Chicken pot is at the top of my list!

The combination of chocolate and peanut butter is so good. I love this pie. Pecan pie has been a favorite for years, i have never had it with cranberries. Sounds interesting. Love the Pi Day list.

ummmm, the chicken pot pie is the one that got me hungry! i’ve always wanted to try making a shepherd’s pie, too, but never have.

Any pie involving fresh fruit will have me scampering to the table. My dad would make strawberry pies in the spring and blackberry pies in June. I have a winter birthday so my mom would make a lemon meringue pie each year. Pie trumps cake any day of the week. On the dinner end, my daughter bakes a fantastic GF savory veggie pie that’s to die for.

I think there must be something wrong with me…I don’t really like pie. I like pie filling, but even the best pie crust in the world is kinda meh to me.

However, I still remember the strawberry-peach pie that Bakerina made us at Estes. Oh my…the best pie I’ve ever had.

    Now I want pie.

My favorite pie is buttermilk chess pie. Seriously sweet but still tangy from the buttermilk.

My dad has always said he only likes 2 kinds of pie — 1 crust and 2 crust!

We’ve got a lot of similarities! I forgot Cherry though – I knew that apple didn’t belong on my list!

You are very clever to add Chicken Pot Pie — Mmmmm, I love that, too. I had to resist the urge to list Cheesecake — it’s always seemed much more pie than cake to me.

Oh look, there’s another Mary K.! Chicken pie and blueberry pie are on my list, too, and I also use packaged chocolate pudding mix, but I put a butter/brown sugar/pecan coating on the bottom crust. More calories are always “better,” right?

Thanks loads…now I NEED some pie. I make a killer key lime pie, and will be making it next week when I am in Florida visiting my mom and dad. Dad is not dessert eater…but he loves my key lime pie. I am not sure that next Wednesday is soon enough now though.

I do enjoy good pie. So often, pie offerings I encounter are sad, soggy, flavorless insults to the good name of pie. My great-grandma used to bake the best pies.

  20. Martha says

    March 15, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Peach pie was my favorite growing up in PA (or more specifically, peach dumplings, like little individual pies with extra crust!) but I proclaimed the other night that cherry was my new favorite (we’ve been on a store-bought cherry pie kick around here lately.) Pie is the best dessert! You can keep your cake, cake people. Cake is THE WORST. Okay, maybe not the worst. But it’s no pie.

Do you recommend the pie book in the picture or is it just a good cover photo?

  22. Sara says

I forgot pecan – but, I think your cranberry pecan pie sounds awesome…

    Love your list…

  23. Beth says

Very clever to include Chicken Pot Pie. That would definitely have been on my last if I had thought of it. 🙂

We are a pie family, that is for sure.

Have you ever had a “Saucy Apple Pie”? I’ll have to get the recipe from my mom and send it to you.

Cherry pie is our favorite, hands down, especially with home grown sour pie cherries. My sister in law makes a wonderful pie that is a cross between pumpkin and pecan pies….

  25. Laurie says

    March 16, 2011 at 5:37 pm

What a tasty list! I confess, I couldn’t come up with ten kinds of pie…just cherry, coconut cream, and lemon meringue. I’m not a big pie gal.

  26. Brenda says

    March 21, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Do you have rhubarb where you live, or is that just a Midwest thing? It is as sour as all get out—my dad is crazy about it, but I have never developed a taste for it, even though I’ve lived in Iowa all of my life. Personally, pie is my favorite food, and with the exception of rhubarb, I’ve never met one I didn’t like. Peach, pecan, chocolate. . . Ummmmm. . . pie.
