A Mini Reorganizing Session

The other day I reorganized the supply cart in my studio. It was a spontaneous action, spurred on by the messiness of my desk. As often happens, the stuff I use every day was scattered about because there was no place to put it while the 4 shelf cart by my desk was full of stuff that I hardly ever use.

I did not take a before photo, unfortunately. But I did take a photo of how it looks now and it’s so much better.

Painting supplies, including brushes and paints are on the top shelf, with an overhanging bin to the left holding more paints. Stickers in various organizers on the second shelf. Colored pencils and markers and stamp pads, along with my label maker, on the third shelf. All sorts of paper, watercolor postcards, manila labels, and blank field notebooks on the bottom shelf.

Don’t be fooled into thinking this is everything, though. My desk has a turntable full of Tombow brush markers, a scattering of bottles of ink for my fountain pens, more markers and supplies, and the shelf behind my desk is full of even more markers, pens, various glues and more.

This took about 15 minutes of my time and I’m so much happier with how it looks. And now that I’m spending more mornings in this room, it feels way less chaotic and infinitely more peaceful.

  1. I have to do this continuously since I do not put things in their place very often when I am finished with them. My mother tried to teach me to do this while I was growing up, but my fall back position is always to wait until it’s very messy, then do a organizing session. You are right, it does feel so much more peaceful when it is not messy. Lately, my answer has been to go through things and get rid of them if I haven’t been using them. rather than moving things around. It helps quite a bit. Congratulations on your more peaceful area. The view out your window is still impressive.

  2. It all looks nice and neat, but I’d like to get into that third shelf! I always wanted to use my mother’s label maker but she would never let me, so of course, it still seems like a desirable. forbidden thing. I know I could buy myself a label maker but having the actual thing probably wouldn’t be that much fun for me.

  3. There must be a “clean it up” wind blowing about… I reorganized my desk Monday and Tuesday! It feels so good to have an ordered space! Your space looks lovely!! I really like that turntable… hmm, I think I need one of those! Ha!

  4. It all looks so nice! I want to get some more pens and markers (not sure why as I don’t really use them much…but I like the idea of having them). This reminds me that I have files to go through and a massive amount of paper to dispose of…maybe this weekend? It always does feel better when you make things neat and organized.
