March Money Madness: Week 4

March 22, 2022 By Carole

As we head into the home stretch of March Money Madness, I’ve been thinking about how I want to approach this going forward. But first, as an update, this week was much the same as the previous weeks. I stuck to our meal plan, I didn’t go shopping other than for groceries, and I haven’t added anything else to my Amazon shopping cart.

I think this is all excellent because it’s given me the confidence to believe this is a sustainable lifestyle change. Maybe not quite as drastic as avoiding shopping all together but rather evolving into a . . . mindfulness . . . about spending money. While I’ve become more aware of where the money goes and how it’s sometimes wasted, I’ve also put a lot of thought into my relationship with money. I think, like many people, that my thoughts about money are complicated. Because, so often, we just don’t talk about money. It’s not polite to ask how much someone makes or how much debt they have. It’s rude to comment on spending habits or ask how much something cost, and it all just feels so secretive to me.

Now, this could be because of my childhood. We did not have money, but there was an illusion that we did and appearances were very important to my mother. I had stylish clothes and we lived in a nice house. Of course, no one knew that we ran out of oil when there wasn’t money to fill the tank, the lights would be turned off because the electric bill wasn’t paid, and my mother used food stamps at the grocery store. I’m trying to break free from the weird relationship I’ve always had with money, to rid myself of the shame I associated with the lack of money as a child, and to open myself up to opportunities for more money to come into my life.

I think money mindfulness will help me change my thinking from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset. I will continue to focus on this and will update you monthly on the progress I’m making in the hopes that it might help you, too.

March Money Madness: Week 3

March 16, 2022 By Carole

Let’s recap week 2 of my journey into March Money Madness.

I’m putting myself in the win category again this week but I did have a couple of expenses I hadn’t anticipated. Well. Not exactly unanticipated. More like un-planned. But necessary.

Allow me to explain.

First, I had completely forgotten that I had scheduled my car to go in for a 30,000 mile service appointment. That was a big ticket item but it needed to be done and I consider it to fall under the category of paying bills.

Second, I had to buy a birthday present for my bestie. I shopped local. But I suppose I did technically break the rules. Nevertheless, I wasn’t about to let her birthday slip by without notice.

Third, we attended an in-person Kiwanis meeting at a local restaurant for the first time since last November. I was specifically asked to attend to read a letter from the Board of Selectmen so it couldn’t be avoided. We enjoyed a nice dinner out and caught up with friends.

All other expenditures were related to paying bills or buying food from the grocery store. We did not get take out and I brought my lunch to work every day – which is something I generally do anyway. Eliminating take out on Wednesdays requires a little more effort on my part but the benefits of that go beyond saving money since I get to see Jackie enjoy something I’ve made and we tend to be a little more formal about it and sit at the table as a family to eat.

I won’t lie, there are some things I am jonesing to purchase and I’ve got a small list for April 1st. I predict that some of those things on the list won’t matter by then, but there is one big ticket item that I’ve wanted forever and I’m thinking it might be the perfect reward for not spending extra this month.

And that’s this week’s March Money Madness update.

March Money Madness: Week 2

March 8, 2022 By Carole

As promised, I’m here with the first of my weekly updates with regards to spending less money in March.

If I were handing out grades for this project, I’m give myself an A for week 1. We did eat out once, meeting up with friends for dinner before a concert (I know! a concert! with real live music for the 1st time in 2 years!) Other than that, though, I cooked for us at home, even on Wednesday night when the kids came over, which is traditionally a night for take out. (As an aside, I made spaghetti which Jackie adores, and to see his delight that I could make his current favorite food made all the effort completely worthwhile.) I planned our meals carefully, using up a few things from the freezer and pantry, and keeping my grocery bill to just over $100 when it’s typically around $150-175. The only other purchase I made was for gas. And I paid some bills.

At this point it feels sort of . . . freeing. I get emails for online sales and I ignore them, not in my usual way of thinking about what I might purchase, but in this new way where I immediately dismiss them because buying something would break the rules. I have added a couple of items to my Amazon wish list (things I’d like for my OLW project, actually) but I may decide I don’t need them by the time April rolls around. In person shopping might be harder to resist but I haven’t been in Target since before the pandemic started so that’s not a temptation and I’m just staying far away from HomeGoods right now.

And that’s where I am with one week of March Money Madness under my belt. I suspect this may get harder as I get further into the project but for now I’m calling it a win and reveling in the freedom of not spending money.

March Money Madness: Week 1

March 1, 2022 By Carole

I’ve been thinking about money lately. There’s nothing wrong and we’re doing fine, financially (knock on wood). We have a (very low) mortgage and two car payments, we pay our credit card in full every month, we have savings and retirement and investments. But I think we (or at least I) spend too much. I buy things on Amazon that I don’t really need. I stock up on food at the grocery store when I have things in the freezer at home. I buy shoes. (that might be a big downfall).

So, I’ve decided to try something I’m calling March Money Madness.

The goal:

to spend as little money as possible in the month of March

The rules:

it’s okay to spend money on food but take out and restaurants are discouraged
it’s okay to replace things that break

it’s okay to pay bills, of course
any emergency situations don’t count
gift card use is encouraged (we have lots of gift cards that just pile up because we forget about them).
all other spending is verboten

I’ll report in weekly to share how I’m doing and how I’m feeling. I don’t expect this to go perfectly and, were I to place a bet, I’ll probably spend money on something that goes against the rules. But the idea is to try to not buy things mindlessly. To . . . ahem . . . practice spending less.

Wish me luck and let’s see where this takes us.

P.S. Of course I put in a big ole order on Amazon yesterday to gird my loins!
