It's a new month and that means it's time to look back on what I…
Read With Us: The Fall 2024 Announcement
It’s the much anticipated day where Bonny, Kym and I tell you what we’ll be reading and discussing this season. And I think two things:
- we have made an excellent choice
- you’d have to be living under a rock to not have heard about this book even though it was just published two weeks ago.
We have chosen Sally Rooney’s latest, Intermezzo. And boy is it buzz-worthy.
There have been interviews and news articles, launch parties and reviews. This book is having.a.moment.
I haven’t read it yet but I do have it from the library and I will be starting it very soon. I have deliberately not read any reviews or summaries as I really want to experience this one without a lot of preconceived ideas. I did see someone refer to Sally Rooney as Sally Ruin-me and that tells me all I need to know.
This is our longest lead time of the year and we won’t be discussing this until January 7, 2025. Hopefully that gives you all enough time to get your hands on this one because the library wait lists are bound to be eternal.
I can’t wait to have you all Read With Us again!

I have only read one Sally Rooney book prior to this and wasn’t impressed, but I know you all are serious about your picks and even if I don’t like this one, I’ll still enjoy the discussion. I actually already got it from the library and am about halfway through!
I picked up a copy at my library yesterday!! I’m surprised I got it so quickly. There was a review of it in The Wall Street Journal over the weekend, but I purposely did not read it. I hope I can get to this…and read and finish it before it is due back at the library (too many “new” books came in for me).
Like Sarah, I have only read one Sally Rooney book and… yeah it was okay, not great, but okay. I am going to read this with an open mind (despite having a very rocky start with it) But as always, I love our discussions so much!
I am not a total Sally Rooney fan . . . although I liked her most previous one (Beautiful World) quite a lot, and I really did get swept away by this new one. I think “older” readers (like, well . . . us) tend to discount her style and content because it’s just not our generation/not our reality. I like it a lot better when I think of her characters as . . . my kids . . . and see it all through their eyes. I think this selection will make for a really good discussion!
My advice for anyone just starting out with this book? Give it time. There is a rhythm, and it took me a while to find it. 😉
I’m having a bit of a rocky start with it, but I’m trusting Kym’s assurances. (I do kind of hope that my kids aren’t behaving this way; it’s probably better that I don’t know!)
I get my best book recommendations from you. I will be curious to see how you like this when you are finished. I just ordered one of your past recommendations, “Tell Me Everything”.
Hello (from under a rock)!! 😉
This will be my first Sally Rooney! I was sorry to miss the last discussion, so am really looking forward to Jan 7th!
I’ve never read her books but put this on hold after the last meeting. The hold list is long but hopefully it will move along and I have a plan B to pick it up if the hold doesn’t come in by a certain day.
Oh, cool! I put it on hold when I read about it in the NYTimes. My library app says I should have it in 9 weeks, which means I’ll have it before the discussion. Looking forward to it.
