Three On Thursday

Back this week with 3 more random things on my mind.

  1. This weekend is a long weekend and Monday is a holiday. I want to call it Indigenous People’s Day. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, however, still recognizes it as Columbus Day. Some cities and towns have changed the name but not where I live. And so, I have taken to calling it . . . the fall holiday. Take that, Christopher Columbus!
  2. My Kiwanis club is once again displaying a Field of Flags on our Town Common. It’s $10 to sponsor a flag in honor of or in memory of a veteran. The proceeds from this fundraiser go to support The Fisher House of Boston and the things we do for our community like scholarships for graduating high school students, monthly donations to the two food pantry locations in town, a monthly donation to a local women’s shelter, and more. I know in the past some of you have sponsored a flag, if you’d like to do so this year, please visit the Kiwanis Club main page and click the Donate button. Make sure to leave a note that says your donation is for Field of Flags and the name of the veteran you are honoring or memorializing. Thanks!
  3. Florida is on my mind and I’m sure it’s on yours, too. Our oldest son Brant and his wife Heather evacuated Port Charlotte and are staying in Miami with friends. Their daughter Ambrynn is with them as well. I am relieved that they left but concerned about what they will find when they return. When you’re sending good thoughts to the people impacted by Hurricane Milton I’d appreciate it if you included them, too.

And that’s all I have for you this week!

  1. When, as a nation, are we going to take our foot off the Indigenous People’s necks?! They are still living in the kind of poverty that few people know in this country. Agreed, this should be Indigenous People’s Day and should be followed by recognition of their needs. I will certainly be putting your family in Florida in my thoughts and hoping all goes well for them. The weather just keeps getting more scary by the day. I have good friends in Asheville, and it’s just astoninshing how destructive weather can be.

  2. Good thoughts are sent to Brant and family. I hope their house is still standing and they have power when they return.

NJ still calls it Columbus Day. The governor decided to keep it to recognize Italian-Americans. I didn’t realize it was a federal holiday (but I often don’t know what day of the week it is).

  3. I’ve been concerned about a former colleague who lives in a highrise condo right on the ocean in Sarasota. I just found out she is on vacation in Italy, but I wonder what she will come home to.

  4. I refuse to call it Columbus Day anymore. A neighborhood right next to ours is considered our city’s “Little Italy,” and of course they have a big parade there every year — which I avoid. I think we all need to do much more to remember and honor our Indigenous people.

I’m so glad that your Florida family is safe. I think people took the warnings much more seriously after seeing what Helene did. There’s still a lot of destruction, but so far it seems like vastly less loss of life. Things can be replaced; people cannot. I’ll be keeping them in my thoughts.

  5. I’m so glad that Brant and family are safe! Keith’s family in Fort Myers weathered the storm at home — with well-reasoned rationale for doing so, I might add – and suffered minimal damage. So good news there, too. I’m sending all the juju for all the people impacted by the storms in the south over the past few miserable weeks. (And here’s to a quiet last month of hurricane season, too. . . ) XO
