Wildcard Wednesday

I picked another 60 dahlias, cutting long stems and sacrificing future flowers by taking buds with them because the reality is that they probably won’t live long enough to bloom. That’s sad and there’s a metaphor in there somewhere about life, I think.

Here’s a not very good photo of one of the vases I filled. There are 6 others scattered throughout my house and they bring me a lot of joy. I don’t have any special secrets to success with this. I think it’s due to a lot of manure, a lot of help from Dale, and a lot of (frankly) luck.

We have one more overnight with temps in the upper 30s and then we’ve got a warming trend headed our way so the plants should be okay for another week, at least.

I’ll keep picking as long as they keep blooming.

  1. We had a pretty good frost last night and I thought about your dahlias. I hope they do okay through the warming trend!

  2. We had a freeze warning on Monday night, but I don’t think anything actually “froze” in my garden. I still have basil, and my dahlias are hanging in there (for now). It’s such a crap shoot with dahlias in the fall, isn’t it? Yours are just stunningly beautiful, Carole! I love seeing your bouquets. XO

  3. I just continue to be stunned by how many flowers you have gotten from your dahlias, Carole. Ballpark for me how many you think you have planted and over how long you have planted dahlias. I bet you are being too humble about your efforts in achieving this result.

  4. I’m amazed you have any blooms left given how many you’ve cut recently! But I know that you grow them to enjoy them, and you’re certainly doing that. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you get a bit longer for them to grow.

  5. Wow! You have had so many flowers, that’s awesome! The frost killed the rest of my flowers that the grasshoppers left behind a few nights ago. I hope you miss the frost and can keep bringing in flowers.
