Shows up and you aren't prepared. You didn't take any photos over the weekend. You…
A L’il Home Improvement Update
We are still in the thick of things with our living room and dining room renovation project but I think things have changed enough that it warrants an update on the current state of affairs.
First, the stuff that’s completed:
the hardwood floors are done in the front entryway, living room, and dining room
the fireplace is working (and we are loving it)
the front entryway and stairway, including the second floor landing, are painted
the plastering is done
the radiator in the dining room is gone and the little recessed cubby has been covered in wainscotting like the rest of the room
the weird window in the dining room is removed and plastered over (it harkened back to when our mudroom was actually a porch and served no purpose anymore)
the door to our cellar has been reconfigured to open into the cellar rather than into the living room
Now, the stuff that still needs to get done:
painting the dining room (the painter is starting today!)
installing the custom cabinets and shelving in the living room (I think this is happening today, too!)
painting the living room
installing the granite around the fireplace (the people from the granite place are coming on Thursday to create a template!)
little details like a strike plate for the new door, putting our blinds back up, putting the tv back on the wall
So, a lot more is done than is left to be done but right now things are still pretty chaotic. When we first started emptying out the living room, I tried to keep like stuff with like stuff. Once it came time to empty the dining room, however, that got tricky. Partly because Dale did it (which I am grateful for times 1000) but also because we really started running out of room to put things. All of the dishes from my hutch and side board are in boxes in the little den. Lamps are upstairs wherever they landed. Our coffee table and end table and dining room chairs are in the garage next door – I think.
I said to Kym over the weekend, there’s weird stuff everywhere and she said that phrase is the hallmark of home redecorating. That’s true and it’s funny as hell. It’s also stressful and I so appreciate everything Dale has done to make this easier for me.
Like setting up the living room in a quasi comfortable set up for the weekend. Yes, our dining room furniture is in there, but the couch is (sort of) back where it belongs and he put a little TV on top of the dining room hutch in (sort of) the place where our regular TV goes. It’s these little things that make it feel almost normal right now and it’s keeping me calm (sort of).
And the fireplace is amazing and we love it. And when I say we, I’m including Fred and George.

What a massive amount of work has been done already, Carole! I know there is still lots to go, but I think once you get to a “certain point” it sort of just all starts going faster (or at least it feels that way!) I hope I am reading a post soon about the big reveal and I can’t wait (although probably not as much as you!) XO
The craziness of reorganizing your life two or three times is, well, crazy. But living with it helps you see it take shape and sometimes spy a needed adjustment before it becomes a big hassle. You’ve come a long way!
I feel like you’re close to the finish line! Cannot wait to see the finished rooms … and I know they will all be warm and inviting and totally you!
Things look great so far and I know they’re going to look even better when it’s complete! I’m glad that Dale is helping make things as good as they can be, and I hope all of you (including F&G) keep enjoying the fireplace.
WOW! That’s a lot of progress. I know there is still a bunch to be finished, but it must feel so good to have so much of it finished. Love the picture of Fred (or George – not sure who) by the fireplace. So cozy!!
Looking good! You are on the home stretch, Carole.
Oh my goodness, Carole! It’s chaotic & unsettling, but SO GORGEOUS!! You’re closing in now, and it sure looks like it’ll be worth it!
I think for me, it’s the “having stuff everywhere” that makes house projects so stressful. I’m glad to hear that things are finishing up and winding down. It won’t be too much longer before everything is back in its correct place!
Oh I can see how great it’s gonna be (even without the much shorter “to do” list)! It’s so exciting!!
This is so very exciting! 🙂
Big projects . . . bring big payoffs. (Eventually.) It’s looking great, Carole. And you’ll be so pleased when it’s finished. XO
