My friend Jo-Ann asked: What do you not know how to do that you'd like…
You Asked, I’m Answering #2
On my Ask Me Anything post, Mary asked: If you couldn’t live in your beautiful little town, where, in the whole wide world, would you like to give it a go??
Now here’s a Question with a Capital Q.
And the honest answer is, I don’t know. But I do have some qualifiers.
I don’t really want to leave Massachusetts. I may have felt differently about this a few years ago but in today’s political climate I am staying firmly in my blue state. Having said that, I do live in a red town so the option of being in a community with like minded voters is definitely appealing.
I’ve always wanted to live by the water. And when I say by what I actually mean is I want to drink my morning coffee while looking out over a body of water. I’d be okay with a lake but I think I’d prefer the ocean. This criteria puts me along the coast, from the North Shore all the way to the tip of Cape Cod.
I can pretty readily rule out the North Shore. I’m sure it’s great but it’s closer to the city (I’m so not a city girl) and it’s further north so it’s colder (especially the water) and once I’ve gotten my fill of fried clams from Woodman’s I think I’d be done. Moving south, I can also dismiss the South Shore. For one, it’s a tad . . . elitist. And for another, the water is still too cold for swimming. I mean, what’s the point of living on the water if you can’t go in it except for the week of the 4th of July?
And that brings me to Cape Cod. There are many towns on the Cape to choose from and I can pretty readily narrow it down to two: Falmouth or Brewster. Both are charming and have great beach options and terrific restaurants. But there’s one thing that Brewster’s got that Falmouth doesn’t and that is my life long college bestie, Doreen.
So. On the water. Great shopping. Delightful village. ELEVEN beaches on Cape Cod Bay. And a best friend.
Brewster here I come.
There’s just one question left to ask . . . does anyone have $3 million dollars I can have?

I love your thought process on this question, Carole! And I swear, if I had any extra money laying around I would for sure send it your way to make that Brewster dream come true!
That is such a logical thought process to arrive at Brewster, except for that three million dollar part! I’ve only been on the Cape once, visiting John while he wrote his thesis in Wood’s Hole. Unfortunately, I picked 4th of July weekend to go and it was beyond crowded. Hopefully, you can avoid most of the crowds in Brewster.
Have I ever told you that we used to go on family vacations in Brewster when I was a teen? I love that place! And it’s got a fabulous bookstore, too! We went back a number of years ago, and we keep talking about going back (mainly because we were in a terrible rental that kind of ruined the experience and we need a do-over).
I love your quantifiers. I was discussing this with my husband last night. My first quantifier, like yours is what I see when I look out from the porch!
Your process of elimination was fun to read. Thanks for answering. Looking forward to seeing your answers to more of the questions!
An interesting and smart process Carole! And what a cute picture of you and Dale!
Can I be your neighbor? If only I had enough money to buy a place for both of us! 🙂
Wow! And people round here complain at our housing prices.
Maybe there’s a 3 decker we can afford…you, me and margene! Oh no…that would be Worcester! 🙂
