Ask Me Anything: Learning Something New

My friend Jo-Ann asked: What do you not know how to do that you’d like to learn?

She mentioned that she was learning to crochet and I got inspired. I’ve wanted to learn to really crochet (not just an edge on something) and I particularly want to be able to make granny squares and granny circles. I reached out to my friend Sean and asked if he’d be willing to teach me and he immediately said yes.

I had my first lesson last Friday and here’s what I’ve done this week:

It’s a little wonky in spots (I struggle a bit when I reach the end of the round) but I’m getting better and also more comfortable with the whole process.

My next lesson is tomorrow and I’m hoping to learn how to change colors.

Learning something new is good for me and learning something useful is even better.

  1. Well, good for you! I think your square looks lovely! And go you for learning a new (and I think) and very hard thing! Crochet… the thing that can make me feel like I have 10 thumbs!

  2. Yay, Carole. I have to relearn crochet every time i want to do any. I’m not sure if that means I havea memory problem, or i just get the benefits of learning each time. Ha-ha.

  3. I love that you’re learning to crochet! I’ve been crocheting longer and more consistently than I have been knitting.

  4. Way to go! I hope to see a granny square in the future, one with different colors. The extent of my crochet knowledge is that I can manage a ripple afghan, but that was a long time ago and I’m not sure I could figure it out again.

  5. Yay! Your square looks great! I struggle with consistent tension, but it is getting better. I’m starting to be able to read the patterns better, and have been enjoying the process. I can’t wait to see what you create.

  6. Oh, WONDERFUL! It’s so great to learn something new! I taught myself to crochet when I was a teenager . . . JUST so I could make granny squares! (And I made a LOT of granny squares. . . ) Every now and then, I get the notion to make them again . . . maybe someday.

  7. Congratulations on learning something new to you, Carole. My mother taught me to crochet when I was in elementary school. Crochet and embroidery were my gateway drugs for needlework. It’s funny that you say you have problems with tension. I have no problems with tension in crochet, but I still have problems with tension in knitting at times. I guess it’s all about that muscle memory thing. I hope you have lots of fun with this.

  8. How wonderful to learn something new! And, this reminds me to get back to my granny squares! I started making them to use up leftover sock yarn. Like Robby, each time I pick it up I have to re-learn how to do it! LOL

  9. Look at you go! My daughter has taught herself a lot of crochet stitches and even done entire patterns by watching videos on YouTube. It’s always great to have a friend who can teach you, but when you need help in the middle of the night, it’s such a good resource.

  10. Awesome! I recently took up crochet, too, to make granny squares. It’s fun to me to learn a new way to work with yarn.

  11. I learned how to make a granny square a couple of summers ago and just kept going on the one until it was a blanket. It took me forever. 😉 Those end of round corners are tough! Nice work Carole! (And that was the end of crochet for me!)
