Three On Thursday

Dale and I attended a wonderful event last night at Symphony Hall in Boston. I’ll tell you more about it next week but for now just know that it was a partnership between WGBH (our local public radio station, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and PBS. Before the show Dale and I were discussing the threats to funding for the arts and public radio and television and I said that perhaps we needed to considering increasing our monthly donation. And then that lead me to the idea for this post, the 3 monthly charitable contributions we make.

  1. PBS. We have been monthly sustainers for a long time. Not only does it get us early access to our favorite shows like Call the Midwife and All Creatures Great and Small, but it also feels really good to help fund something we both appreciate, admire, and enjoy. I’ve said for a very long time that if I ever had a LOT of money that I would want to be one of the people listed at the beginning of a show with the words, this program brought to you in part by a grant from the Carole Julius Foundation.
  2. Planned Parenthood. I started donated to this organization monthly back in 2016 and I’m sure that date tells you exactly why. It’s about being pro choice, sure, but it’s also about women’s access to health care, birth control, cancer screening and so much more.
  3. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This organization sends books monthly to children under the age of 5 around the world. They have regional partners and, while the program is not based on a family’s income, it certainly targets areas where children might have issues accessing books and libraries. As of February 2025 they have gifted over 270 million books.

We certainly give to other charities throughout the years but these monthly donations sum up our values pretty well: the arts, women’s health, and literacy.

  1. This is wonderful Carole. We have upped our donations in the past few years and it just feels wonderful to be doing something! I. had not heard of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, so thank you for sharing that!

  2. Same! I admire the goals of these three organizations so much, and they are helping people in essential ways on a daily basis. I am watching what the administration is going to do to federal funding for PBS and NPR. It’s inevitable that it will be cut. I am planning on upping my contributions to them as well. I feel like I should be willing to pay them as much or more than I do a streaming platform, especially since Ithink their program quality is superior.

  3. These are great places to contribute. I’m right there with with donations to PBS and Planned Parenthood as they need our $$ more than ever. When I win the lottery, a bunch of it is going to PBS so I can hear “this program brought to you in part by a grant from the Bonny Becker Foundation” (and it might even be a program about knitting)!

  4. We are, likewise, monthly PBS sustainers and I recently became an NPR monthly sustainer as well! And thank you for the heads up on Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library!

  5. My husband is currently chair of the board of our local PBS station, so needless to say, we’re big supporters. Their programming is among my favorite, and honestly I think we might be in a better place in this country if more channels were focused on content that was so well produced and educational. I think NPR is right up there, too. (Are you aware of the Protect My Public Media effort? If not, I’d definitely check it out — I think it’s something you’d be happy to support.)

Also, Dolly is a national treasure. I wish we had more people like her who have used their fame and fortune for good.

  6. I’ve heard about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library over the past few years — I’m shocked to see that it’s been a thing for 30!!
