We kicked off summer in our town last night with the annual Dale and the…
The Pinks Have Demanded Equal Time
The pink flowers around here are a little miffed that they were ignored and the purple was amplified. In the interest of fairness, I present the things that are blooming right now that are . . . PINK.

This knockout rose bush has just 2 blooms at the moment but loads of buds. It’s a low maintenance rose and it blooms for most of the summer and then it often blooms again in the fall.
The weigela is doing really well this year and has bounced back nicely after Dale and I had a . . . misunderstanding . . . about pruning it last year. I had asked him to cut it down to about a foot off the ground and he thought I said to cut it all the way to the ground. As you an imagine, it didn’t put on much of a show last year but this year it is fuller than ever and really lovely. I can see it from the window over my kitchen sink and that brings me a lot of joy.
This dianthus is new and that’s why it’s in full bloom now. I had a bit of a hole in the foundation bed in this spot (because there’s a stupid wild rose bush that keeps trying to grow in this area and we keep digging it out, I swear if I was trying to get a rose bush to grow there it would fail) and I couldn’t resist this vibrant pink color.
Finally, this Percy Wiseman rhododendron is flourishing this year and it’s right on schedule. Kym always told me, when it comes to plants, the first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps, and the third year it leaps and this is year 3 for this beauty and it’s never looked so full. It really brings that front corner of my foundation bed to life and I love it.
In other news, we are camping for the weekend and the weather is . . . less than ideal. Cold and windy and today we’re getting a nor’easter, it sure doesn’t feel like the kick off to summer. Wish me luck and I’ll catch you back here on Tuesday.

Gorgeous flowers. I can’t remember every hearing of weigela, but it sure is pretty.
Hope your weather clears up a bit. We have rain (and cold) today, possibly rain tomorrow, but Saturday is supposed to be rain-free (Sunday too). Chillier than normal temps though (good campfire weather!). Have fun!
We have weigela but we never prune it… hmmm, maybe I need to look up some more information on them (our weigela are very old… probably planted when this house was finished 60-ish years ago!)
Your pink things are looking lovely! Stay dry this weekend!
Your garden is certainly… in the pink. (groan) Have an extra cosy camping trip. I mean, it’s still along weekend.
That rhododendron! I am a bit too far south to grow them here, but I had a yard full of them when I lived in the mountains in NC. They are a beautiful bush, and I think this is one of the most beautiful ones I have ever seen. I hope you find a cozy way to enjoy your weekend camping. As you have told me, attitude is everything. 🙂
That dianthus is beautifully pink and shouting out for recognition! Please reassure the pinks that they are lovely, too. It was pretty cold here yesterday and it’s colder today. John keeps looking at the thermostat but I am not turning on the heat when we’re approaching the end of May. We’ll see who wins that battle. I hope you have plenty of heat in the camper and can enjoy a cozy weekend camping.
The pinks are worthy of this attention! I hope you enjoy your weekend and stay as warm and dry as possible.
I hope your weekend turned out better-than-expected! I think Memorial Day weather is a total crapshoot this far north. I have so many memories of cold, rainy Memorial Day weekends over the years! It rarely feels like “the beginning of summer” to me . . . Your garden is looking so lovely, Carole! XO
