Read With Us: The Summer 2025 Announcement

It’s a day that only comes 4 times a year, friends, the day that Bonny and Kym and I announce our next choice for the Read With Us group. We had a . . . challenging . . . time choosing a title for this round and actually had something completely different chosen until about 2 minutes before our Zoom session to discuss Nesting. But despite the last minute switcheroo, I think we’ve made a great call.

The book is The Friend by Sigrid Nunez. And, we’re adding a new element this time around, based on something a book club that Kym belonged to used to do. We’re asking you to not only read the book but also watch the movie (same name) based on the book. When we gather for our discussion on Tuesday, September 17th at 7 pm we will discuss both the book and the movie, comparing and contrasting them. As a librarian, I tend to always think the book is better but I’m willing to test that theory for the sake of our book club.

The book came out in 2018 and I read it in 2019 and rated it 4 stars. I don’t remember much about it and will certainly be reading it again. It’s only just over 200 pages and should be readily available at your library, on Libby or Audible, or from your local book store. The movie, which is also called The Friend, came out in 2024 and it stars Naomi Watts and Bill Murray. It is available to rent on Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home. It isn’t free right now but maybe that will change.

I’m excited for this new twist to our discussion and I hope you will be as well and that you will join in this summer and read (and watch!) The Friend with us.

  1. This is an interesting twist! I read the book previously as well and likewise don’t remember much either. I am planning on reading it again as well!

  2. I loved the book when I read it in 2018 . . . and I loved the movie when I watched it last Saturday night with Tom. (Even Tom liked the movie, and it’s really not his kind of movie . . . ) I hope this is a fun “twist” for our Read With Us group this summer!

  3. I think you all know I am not really into movies very much (I get antsy and bored watching them) BUT, I’m looking forward to this twist for our group. Should be fun!

  4. I feel like we usually plan things fairly well, but even those this wasn’t planned far in advance, our change of heart at the very last minute was a good one. I’m looking forward to reading and watching!

  5. Not that I don’t love that we can have a book club while being in so many locations, but wouldn’t it be fun to read the book and then all get together to watch the movie? I’m looking forward to this special twist and am trying to hold off on reading the book (the audio currently has no wait at my library) until closer to the Zoom meeting so I actually remember it!
