So About Hagia Sophia

My first inkling of trouble was when the taxi driver said, as we approached Sultanahmet Square, Hagia Sophia is under construction. Do not worry, he said, it is still open for tours. Okay, I thought. It’s okay. And it was dark so I couldn’t see the structure itself.

The next morning, however, as we approached for our timed tour, I saw the scaffolding. And the dome. That glorious dome made up of 40 slender windows, all letting in light from different angles so that it quite literally glows and appears to be suspended, was covered in a giant grey shower cap. That shower cap? Not letting in any light.

So, my 40 year quest to see the dome of Hagia Sophia, was a bit of a bust. Oh sure, the structure is awesome and the mosaics are intricate and beautiful, and just being in the space was the fulfillment of a dream. The dome, though? No bueno.

I’m just going to pretend I saw it like this. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I’m sorry you were disappointed. Clearly you just need to go back once construction is complete!
awww that’s so frustrating! Turkey looks amazing though. I managed to visit Paris while the Louvre was shut down due to security threats….I just call it reason for another trip.
Oh jeez! That’s disappointing. Maybe you’ll make it back someday! Hopefully the tour was good?
I’m sorry to hear that , but maybe it just means you have to go back again!
Shoot – dare I say, it means you could go again? Still, beautiful!
Ha! I see Bonny and I were on the same wavelength.
Aw, sorry about that. You made the best of it, and you’ll just have to go back!! (I see I’m not alone in that sentiment!)
Oh no. I am sorry about the construction. As everyone says, you will have to go back and maybe take Dale with you next time.
Well that is a major bummer . . . And, yeah. Now you’ll have to take another trip to see it in all its glory. (When my sister and I visited Florence, I had been over the moon about seeing the Bronze Doors of the Florence Baptistery . . . only to find out it was all being restored during our time there. They did allow SOME views of SOME of the doors, and that had to be good enough.)
