One Little Kitten

threelittlekittens.JPG

Like the kittens, I have lost my mittens. They were very nice mittens. They were brown and knit with bulky yarn from the pattern in the book Weekend Knitting. They matched my red wool coat with brown fur trim just perfectly.

I hadn’t even shown them to you yet because I hadn’t been able to obtain good light and a photographer at the same time. Not to mention that we haven’t exactly been having mitten weather here in Southeastern Massachusetts. All that was about to change yesterday, though. I asked Dale if he’d take some photos of me wearing these new and very warm mittens and he said, of course. I was ready to go out the door and I grabbed my red coat but there were no brown mittens in the pockets. I searched through the basket of hand knit scarves and other mittens and there were no brown mittens. I searched the pockets of every winter coat I have and there were no. brown. mittens. I headed to work wearing purple mittens with my red coat with the brown fur trim. Such a disgrace for a knitter to not have mittens that match her coat.

While at my meeting I debated where the mittens could be. I became convinced that they were in a certain bag, one I hadn’t seen for a while. Once home from work I searched for that bag. No brown mittens. I have looked in every place I can think of and I have not found my new brown mittens. Sigh. It just absolutely figures that we finally have weather cold enough to wear these mittens and now I’ve lost them. Just like the three little kittens.

I wouldn’t even mind so much except now I shall have no pie.

  1. So disappointing! My “Charlotte’s Scarf” was either lost or stolen (I believe it was the latter) right before Christmas, and I moped for days.

  2. Too bad! Maybe the little munchkins that steal one sock decided to steal two really cool mittens instead.

  3. I would worry less about the pie and more about the freezing digits (but then again, I’m just plain cold these past few days). Purple mittens with red coat sounds just fine to me, though. (I can be funny like that though, so I wouldn’t trust me too much.)

I do hope they turn up though. Losing handknits is always heartbreaking.

  4. I have often taken off my mittens or gloves, set them in my lap and then gotten out of the car. Lost, lost, lost they are at that point. I hope you find them!!

  5. What a royal pain in the neck! Well, take comfort in the fact that you’ll find them with ease the moment the thermometer hits 60 degrees.

  6. well if you remember the story, the kittens did eventually find the mittens. and there was much rejoicing and pie.

i had/probably still have that book somewhere.

  7. Maybe Elvis borrowed them. I hate mislaying stuff like that. And I am always floored when things materialize out of the ether, like Miss B’s pulling two matching gloves out of the glove drawer this morning when I would have sworn we had only one of that pair (but I had kept it around for years, just in case). I have to make new mittens too, for Taz.

  8. I find it very encouraging that both mittens are gone. No, wait, hear me out! If only one was lost, you’d be totally screwed, because it would mean that one of your mittens was lying in a parking lot somewhere. But TWO missing mittens just means that you put the pair of them somewhere, and they’ll turn up eventually.

  9. Never fear, you’ll find them — probably in the spring or summer when the temps are in the 70s or above! At least that’s when I tend to find such misplaced warm and snuggly things. LOL

Seriously, though, I hope you find them. It’s always frustrating to KNOW you have something and not be able to put your hands on it when you need it. 🙂

  10. What an adorable post about such a horrible loss. I’ll bet you they’ve been stolen. I mean how could one NOT want a beautiul pair of handknit mittens? Then again, if you decide to knit yourself another pair, that’s one the originals will show up!

  11. When you find them, if there’s a pair of Koigu fingerless mitts in there, please mail them to my daughter, aka Kitten #2.

I’ll cross my fingers that you find them and get pie. (What flavor?)

  12. I’m sorry you lost your mittens!
I usually lose mine when I get up and out of my car and they fall on the ground without me knowing. (I hate driving with my mitties on.)

I hope you find them! Mmmmmm, pie.

  13. Perhaps my “former” house-cleaner, who used to enjoy hiding things from us, is now working for you and you don’t even know it!
If she is, at least you’re not PAYING her to hide your stuff.

  14. Well at least it’s both and not just one. That means you put them somewhere “safe” and they’ll turn up. One lonely mitten could be laying in the street somewhere, but it’s unlikely they are both there. I’ll hope for the best.

  15. Might I suggest your next pair have one of those long cords that attaches each mitten and gets threaded thru the sleeves? 😉 :::ducks and runs:::

    Poor mis-matched kitten!

  16. That’s too bad about your mittens. I hope they turn up. I remember the 3 Little Kittens! I hadn’t thought of that for years. Thanks for sparking the memory.

  17. My first thought was to look in the freezer too, how weird is that?

I hope you find them, I always used to stick my mittens in one sleeve of my coat. It worked… if I ever no, WHEN I knit myself some mittens I’m going to put a cord on them and thread them through the sleeves though. Let’s just say I know myself. Plus, you’d laugh at the number of times I put my coat on with the mittens still in the sleeve – talk about a big lump! hehe

  18. Poor little kitten.. Purple???? and Red???, There wasn’t a red hat I hope…. Does Mason (or Dixie) have new brown mittens? Deb

  19. You’re going to find those mittens…when you’re looking for something else. That’s when things show up here,
    Li

  20. Did you check in the Christmas decorations?
Then you can a good little who found her mittens, then you have some pie! I have both books 😉
