Ten On Tuesday

Squash blog size

I had fun with our topic from a few weeks back, 10 Things in Your Refrigerator so I thought it would be interesting to recycle that topic and do 10 Things In Your Freezer Right Now. I have not only my freezer/fridge combo but I big freezer in the garage. It comes in handy for all this stuff, that’s for sure.

  1. Turkeys. I cooked one a couple of weeks ago but I think there are still 2 more out there. I think they might be breeding in the cold and dark.
  2. Pie crust. Whenever I make pie crust I make an extra batch and stick it in the freezer. That way, when I want to make a pie, the crust is ready to go.
  3. A big bag of chopped green peppers. These are from our CSA this summer and they freeze great and it’s so easy to just scoop out what I need for a recipe.
  4. Cranberries. These also freeze great and will be used for cranberry sauce and cranberry pecan pie when Thanksgiving rolls around.
  5. Mystic Pizza. As frozen pizza goes, this is pretty good.
  6. Spaghetti Sauce. I made a big batch last winter and froze the sauce in amounts that are not too much for just Dale and I. I was thinking, though, that we could have spaghetti on one night and then meatball sandwiches on a second night and that should use up all the sauce.
  7. Chicken, pork tenderloin, hamburger and other assorted packages of meat. I buy it when it’s on sale, of course.
  8. Ice. I’m ready for a martini at a moment’s notice.
  9. Kona coffee from Hawaii that Dale’s friend Arthur brought us. I’ve been hording it but it won’t last forever.
  10. 2 ripe bananas. I really need to bake a banana bread and get rid of those.

That’s just a sampling of what’s in my freezer. What’s in yours?

Your freezer is much more exciting than mine. I’m stocked with amazing gluten free bread and pizza crusts I bought when I was in Seattle, homemade marinara sauce, assorted bags of fish from Costco, homemade pesto, and more blue ice packs than is humanly possible to purchase.

I always have pizza dough in my freezer! My “freezing the shredded cheese” experiment didn’t work too well, though. At the moment I also have a pheasant in there, but since we didn’t like the two I cooked a few weeks ago, I think that will get tossed. I’ve got an ice cream maker insert taking up half the top shelf, but ready to go at a minute’s notice! There’s a pan of apple pie bars, a whole unbaked Northern Spy apple pie and several batches of cooky dough. Foodsaver bags filled with pork chops and chicken breasts and, well, I’m afraid to check out the bottom of that big pullout drawer! Oh, lots of ice…don’t know how we lived before that ice maker!

Chicken, a lot of chicken. My hubby helps butcher with his brother.

Ok so I have a story for you.

I SAW YOUR HUSBAND AT RHINEBECK! I was so excited because I thought surely you would be with him but you weren’t. He was waiting by the benches not too far from the gate, right by that building with the rainbow on it. I was so sad that I didn’t see you because I have read your blog every day for-ever! I almost went up to him and said, “Are you Dale from Dale and the Duds?” but then thought he might think I was a crazy stalker and I might want to be allowed back in the state of New York in the future. Hope you had fun at Rhinebeck, I sure did! Sorry I didn’t get to meet you.

I have frozen servings of my favorite summer squash/zucchini/corn/green chili casserole. It will be so yummy during the cold winter ahead and a nice reminder of summer.

Come to think of it, I should make an extra batch – I ran out last year…

My freezer contains about what yours does, sans anything with wheat or bananas. Smith isn’t a banana bread fan, which is so sad.

Your freezer sounds way better than mine. You could actually make a meal from your freezer! Now I really feel like I need to go shopping.

Our freezers are not dissimilar. This morning, however, my husband looked for his phone in the freezer, thinking that perhaps he absentmindedly set it there (it’s missing). No luck!

You must have one serious freezer – I can barely fit ONE turkey in mine – no way could I have two with room to breed! 😉

Frankly, our freezer is silted up in the back with all kinds of crap including the ice cream maker, one piece of birthday cake that says “I Love You Mommy” on top, and many (many) cool pax that our kids put in there over the years and forgot about which have also invaded (I mean taken over) the nooks on the inside of the freezer door. The forward right corner is the only part with new stuff in it – frozen meats, some frozen pie crusts from Mrs. Smith, and yummy yummy bags of Buitoni (sp?) Mushroom Ravioli.

Had two 21CF chest freezers in Montana, one for meat and poultry, the other for fruit and vegs, root cellar, and a giant frig, all packed. Now, only a modest side by side. Salmon, halibut, whole chicken, chicken pieces, blueberries, egg whites, lime juice, freezer packs for lunches, yeast, xanthan gum, butter, chicken broth, pesto, Peet’s coffee, DD’s raspberry sorbet. Not even a bag of oatmeal cookies hidden in the back. Dieting is drab.

Love your pie crust idea. I also got some great ideas from the comments. For instance, I think a visit to Jessalu is in order to help her with that cupcake situation!!

To get to 10, I had to be creative and mention the ice packs and the ice cubes and list every kind of meat separately cause I really have just 3 things in my freezer: meat, butter, and blueberries. We had a forced cleanout a while ago (evacuated for a week for wildfires and there was no power for the whole week, so it all went bad). But it’s great that there are no UFOs (unidentified frozen objects). I love knowing exactly what is in there and not having any of those things that you know you should use up but never get around to.

Mine contains containers and bags with wild Maine blueberries, popsicles- strawberry, lime and pineapple, bags and bags of tomato sauce, ground turkey, ice packs, a bag of ice, box of frozen tubes of Yoplait Gogurt, ice cream, rice, chicken necks, gizzard and heart for soup, ravioli’s, and shrimp to name a few.

I have a ton of bananas in my freezer. I’ll bake them soon, but UGH, frozen flaccid banana sliding out of blackened peel is SO YUCK.
Also, all the heels from the last mumblemumble loaves of bread, for the ducks at the park.

Not sure what’s in there. The light burned out in my freezer years ago and now the light in the garage is acting up and I can’t see inside the freezer. Might have to get brave and cook whatever my hand finds 😉
