The most serious charge which can be brought against New England is not Puritanism, but February…. Spring is too far away to comfort even by anticipation, and winter long ago lost the charm of novelty. This is the very three a.m. of the calendar.

~- Joseph Wood Krutch

Hello, February. You’re a mixed bag, aren’t you? You’re a winter month and I have to tell you, that’s a strike against you. Your days are often our snowiest and I don’t love that about you. And that quote up there? About how you drag on like 3 am? Yeah, there’s that, too.

But you have good things in your month like the Super Bowl (go Pats!) and  Valentine’s Day (or, Cream Puff Day, as it’s called at our house) and President’s Day (hullo long weekend) and the Oscars (aka the Super Bowl for movie lovers). And you’re a short month and every day that goes by brings us closer to spring, whether we feel it in the air or not. Your days are longer, at least, even if they aren’t warmer. And festive, what with all the footballs and cream puffs, long weekends and movies.

I’m not sure that good stuff outweighs the cold and snow that you bring but I’m willing to give you a fair shot because I’m doing my best to stay positive these days.

So. Hello, February. I have a feeling you’ll be a good month.

  1. Our February is turning out to be a bit wonky with the weather. Cream puff day, now that’s a concept I could get behind!

  2. 3am of the calendar! Perfect…although that’s March for me. “They” saw fir to place Valentines Day in there…flowers in winter are appreciate. And there is the President’s Day Long Weekend No long weekemds in March and the threat of snow is still there and more offensive when it happens.

But, true, nothing like June that slips though our fingers too fast. February does not slip through…

  3. I love how you found the good things in February! I keep waiting for it to wallop us with snow as we’ve not had a really big storm this winter, but I think I’m going to focus on Cream Puff Day instead.

  4. Cream puffs…may be a good idea to treat the folks at work! We’ve no holidays from January 1 to Memorial Day. The mental health advantages gained from a day off in February can never be underestimated!

  5. February is . . . short! Plus chocolate. And a holiday dedicated to love. More to like than January, that’s for sure. XO

  6. “Hello, February.”, she says. When she says those words it carries the same distaste as the old familiar phrase, “Hello, Neumann.”

  7. I like all your reasons to welcome the month. February may be the snowiest and the coldest, but it is closer to spring than January (and the inversion starts to GO AWAY!)! Inversion be gone day is February 14th!

  8. Love the tulips! Hoping Sunday’s game is a good one – for the first time in many years, I plan to watch it! (regardless, one of us will be happy with the outcome!)

  9. Thanks for the prompt! Somehow I missed the email early in the week so I’m belatedly linking up. For such a short month, your February looks to be packed with good things!
