Wednesdays Are For Knitting: Owl Sleep Sack

I have a new neighbor, he was born last week. His parents are fun and smart and great additions to our community. We can’t visit this little guy because COVID but that doesn’t mean I didn’t knit something for him to say welcome to the world.

It’s an owlie sleep sack. So cute, right?

His parents are very environmentally conscious people, raising bees and ducks and I figured having their new little guy look like he was snuggled up with an owl would be right up their alley.

The yarn is something I had, the ball band was lost long ago. The pattern is here. And those eyes, well, they weren’t technically recommended, but they really make the owls pop. And truly, he’s an infant and his parents are smart enough to not leave him alone in this thing. I also said I’d happily remove them if they prefer.

I hope this little knitted gift, complete with a couple of sleepers, has provided a nice welcome home to our littlest neighbor.

  1. That is literally a warm welcome for a new little person. I’m sure his parents feel the warmth from your kindness too.

  2. You are now officially their very favorite neighbor, Carole. What a lovely and thoughtful gift. Just FYI, I usually embroider or duplicate stitch for eyes on kids’ stuff. If you put a little dash of white in there for a pupil, you’d be amazed how real they look. I am having a great-nephew in April, and this looks like the perfect gift, maybe in cotton. Thanks for the inspiration.

  3. I love this little sleep sack, Carole! And I love the pattern. I’ve made a few, in goldenrod and sort of a Japanese Maple red. I never thought to add tiny beads for eyes, though–they do POP. (And you’re right–infant.) My cousin’s baby was born at 11 pounds, so they didn’t get much time in the sack. I suggested she use it as a stuff sack in her diaper bag after that. I hated to think it’d be cast aside too soon!
    Lucky neighbor.
