Things That Make Me Go Hmmm

komenmass_blue_logo.gif
~Somehow my friends Kathy, Cheryl and Manise convinced me to sign up for the 2007 Massachusetts Race for the Cure. Our team is called “Spun and Run” but you can be sure I’ll be walking not running. It takes place on September 23rd and finding a cure for breast cancer, while not as near and dear to my heart as finding a cure for colon cancer, is still something that would be incredible for all women. If you’d like to support me by making a donation click here. Thanks so much!

~I signed up for One Local Summer and participating fully has been much harder than I thought it would be. The CSA has really helped with procuring local vegetables and eggs but pulling together an entirely local meal is truly difficult. We’ve had several mostly local meals over the last few weeks but I’ve yet to make a meal that is entirely local. Hopefully you’ll see one here soon.

~Anyone need anything from Pampered Chef? I had a party last night and am trying to get up to the next level with an outside order or two. If you’d like to order anything please email me at cjuliusATcarverplDOTorg and I’ll take care of it for you.

~I don’t want to give you too much information on my Tour de Fleece participation since the contest is open until the tour ends but I will tell you that I’ve spun about what I thought I would have by this point. Can I just say, though? Some of you are really optimistic about my spinning capabilities!

~Ten copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows arrived yesterday and will be sitting in my office unopened until July 21, 2007. Now that’s willpower, my friends.

  1. I was talking to a woman who works at our local bookstore, and she said they have to sign their life away swearing that they won’t open those boxes. Doesn’t stop people from asking them too, however.

  2. hmmm you’re walking? maybe i need to sign up after all.

hey, if you’re tempted, you can store those books at my house. since i’m not a harry potter fan, your books would be safe here.

  3. I am so impressed. You’re doing all these cool things: the walking, the spinning, the hostessing and local cooking but not opening that box is the most amazing.

  4. I haven’t signed up yet, but Cheryl did get me to start doing the running training program.

I’ve been thinking we really need to sign up with a CSA, too. There’s one just to the north of us I keep meaning to look into.

  5. I don’t know that I could resist opening that box and reading it for myself…of course I wouldn’t tell anyone, but the temptation would just be too much to bear.

  6. Oh my, I really don’t think I could face that box every day and resist!! My DD#1 has been donning her “Read the Book it’s Better” hoodie since Tuesday evening when we saw a local theater putting the latest Harry Potter movie on its marquee. The 21st will be a big day in our house. (Poor DS will be in Spain searching maddly for a copy in English – his Spanish isn’t that good yet!)
    Good luck with your walk.

  7. Well, Carole. Here’s the thing. I don’t want you to have to face that awful temptation every day. So. I’ll come sit in your office with the box. I’ll just bring knitting and I’ll sit with it. Promise. So you don’t have to. Don’t open the door…

I didn’t sign up for our local farmer’s co-op this year ’cause we threw away food last year due to just plain business. Now I’m regretting it as it’s hard to get out and get the good produce at the local farm market on Saturday mornings. Would’ve been better off signing up and throwing or giving away some… and seeing your fresh beets makes me even sadder. Ah me. Sitting in your office would cheer me up, though. How about that?!

  8. Our HP books haven’t arrived yet….maybe they don’t trust us?
I haven’t yet signed up for the CSA but I have been buying all my produce at the local farmers market and Co-op! Do I get any brownie points for that?
I’ll take a look at the Pampered Chef goodies and email you…
    Have a GREAT day!

  9. If I was in MA I’d be walking with you. It sounds fun if you do race with pals. Will you tell me the ending of HP as soon as you’re finished? 🙂

  10. Hey Carole…where in MA do you live? I just moved up this way and actually DO want a couple of small things from pampered chef.

  11. We’ve had some “mostly” local meals as well, generally on Tuesday nights after I visit the farmer’s market. Small steps, small steps. (And the same goes for the Race For The Cure.)
As for those books…well, I wouldn’t let anyone else get to them, but I can’t say I’d be able to resist the temptation to take a peek or two. Good thing I’m not a librarian. 😉

  12. oh my. I have zero willpower. There is no way that box could sit in a room with me for that long unopened. Good thing I’m no librarian, eh?

  13. I would have to bury the box of books under stacks of other things. No way would I be able to look at it every day for the next week without being tempted to rip it open.

Good luck with your race fundraising!

  14. Thanks for posting that picture of the box. I will totally show it to my daughter tonight just to see her reaction. She is still trying to get me to promise to send the book to her at camp as soon as it arrives at our house. Teasing her about it is the most fun!

  15. So, I wonder what happens to people who do open the box???? Is there a contractual obligation to not open the box?? Maybe you grow a beard like the Weasley boys who tried to take the Age Potion and put their names in the Goblet of Fire……..I wouldn’t try it!!

    I’m just messin’ with ya!! I wish I was a librarian………seriously!!

  16. Wow. Such willpower! I am very impressed! (actually I’m not *too* impressed, you’re one of the most honest ppl I know. I’d be shocked if you snuck a peek) ;o)

  17. I’m guarding a box of HP books too. Our B&T rep said they had 4 staff members working full-time on it since March. She seemed kinda glad this is the last one.

  18. Well thank god it’s not my mother watching the box. She’s got terrible will power. She can’t even wait until Christmas morning to open her gifts. And she LOVES Harry Potter…so that would be a really bad mix.

I love going to farmers market. I’ve been wanting to knit myself a farmers market bag just for shopping there.

  19. What if, say, that box were to just, oh. . . spontaneously explode? And all the books just came flying out. You couldn’t be held responsible for that, could you? And if some of your nearest and dearest friends just happened to be in the immediate vicinity and happened to rescue some of the flying books, you wouldn’t get in their way, now would you?

  20. I haven’t seen ours arrive yet, but we’re expecting 60 regular print copies, 11 large print copies, 14 on unabridged CD, and 3 on ye olde cassette tapes. 🙂

  21. I’ve been kinds sorta planning to reread the last couple HP books before Deathly Hallows hits my library. I am #4 of 415 requests, so I should get it immediately; 40 libraries in the system, everybody will buy at least one, the larger libraries probably 10 or more. Woot!

    Good for you for walking.

  22. OMG, OMG, OMG, you have The Book!

How can you STAND it?… 😉

I know, code of ethics and so on, but… oh, sweet temptation. 😉

  23. OMG…you are a MUCH stronger woman than I am. There’s no way I could stand looking at that box and not opening it. I guess, from a glass-half-full perspective, at least I’d have enough willpower to not tell anyone else that I cheated. 🙂

Looks we both are walking for fundraisers this year!

  24. Wow, you have so much resistance, I don’t think I could stand having that box next to me without opening it!

Although it might not have been good to advertise to the internets that you have a stash of Book 7, you might find a mob of rabid knitters outside your door one of these days 😉

  25. Such willpower! I can’t join a CSA due to all my food allergies. I do make a weekly pilgrimage up the street to Allandale Farm.

  26. Damn. That IS willpower. I fully intend to be at my local bookstore next Friday night to get my hands on my copy at 12:01.

  27. Great cause for sure! I have too much personal experience with it, but you have my support! Dude you’re almost at goal! I won’t surprised to see it go way over. You’re so good 🙂

  28. I’m now understand the blessing and curse of being a librarian. You most definitely have willpower! Then again, would the book police throw you in jail for opening it? 😉

Good luck with your fund raising efforts and your “run” in September. It’s one of my favorite charities.

  29. You’re just the coolest thing ever. You know that, right?

Are those boxes rigged or something? Will it report back if you open the box early? I’m not a Potter person, but I hate waiting for anything. *L*

  30. OMG OMG OMG, look at the box! How can you look at it??? I’d have to hide it, have somebody else lock it up, some thing! I’ve been in a pottermania phase this last week or so. Like the feeling of being a kid and christmas is coming! We loved movie 5 and are anxiously awaiting book 7!!

  31. But don’t you have to open them up to put the special library jacket on them? And stamp the top and put the little cataloging reference on the spine? And don’t you need to check that the library of Congress has done its job cataloging? (Hey, there’s a thought… I wonder if they have to read it for CIP!)

  32. Wow. That *is* willpower. I am so not into willpower. 😉 I would open, read, and rebox exactly as found. I’m a good snoop.

  33. Local veggies and eggs? Frittata! 🙂

I wouldn’t have that kind of willpower. Good on ya!
