Ten On Tuesday

Winter arrived with a vengeance last weekend here in Massachusetts. We didn’t get any snow but the temps dropped into the single digits and when it does that I want to hibernate in my cozy house. I’m never at a loss for things to do inside and so today’s Ten on Tuesday topic is 10 Things To Do Inside When It’s Too Cold To Go Outside.

  1. Knit. Of course this had to be listed first but the truly great thing about knitting is that you can do it anywhere – inside when it’s cold, outside when it’s warm, it’s the ultimate portable craft.
  2. Spin. Like knitting, spinning can be done outside but there’s something truly awesome about spinning with soft wool when it’s cold outside.
  3. Build a fire. We have a wood stove so there’s always a fire going here but I remember how comforting it was to build a fire in the fireplace in my old house when the temperatures plummeted.
  4. Read. This is best done by that fire.
  5. Play video games. On Sunday Dale and I played the Wii for a good portion of the afternoon. The physical games like bowling and tennis were a great alternative when we felt like we had been sitting on the couch for too long.
  6. Play cards or a board game. It’s fun, it makes you laugh, and there’s something so cozy about playing games on a cold winter night.
  7. Bake cookies. Moving around, gathering ingredients, mixing the batter and all of that will warm you up. The hot oven will warm the kitchen and the yummy cookies will warm your insides.
  8. Organize/clean something. My kitchen pantry is calling my name. So far I’m ignoring it but if it’s cold again next weekend I will tackle this.
  9. Eat things that will warm your insides. Spicy chili, buffalo chicken dip, a hot bowl of soup – you get the idea.
  10. Snuggle by the wood stove. This can also need to another rather pleasant indoor activity. Just sayin.
Stay warm, friends!

  1. good list – similar to mine except for the games part. and there I was thinking the lists would be all knitting!

  2. We’ve had a mild winter and this morning’s weather report has me feeling petulant. I don’t want to need a list of things to do in cold weather. I don’t want to drive on ice. I don’t want grey clouds (insert foot stomping at each period). Thanks for the list. I’m gonna need it.

  3. Great list, lots of things I enjoy! The only thing I could add would be to snuggle on the couch with the dog & watch TV – my girls did alot of that this weekend!!

  4. My list would be almost identical. Hell I’m just getting around to posting the 10 on Tuesday from 2 weeks ago!

I’m not sure how I feel about his winter finally arriving. I know it had to happen, but it sure feels damn cold! And how about that snow last night?

Oh – and I’m loving the Carole Julius Photography imprinted on the bottom of your pictures! You have yourself a little business now 🙂

  5. We’ve barely seen single digits… though I hear that’s coming, right after the snow (falling right now!). Great list, Carole!

  6. I love your list! I should be doing your number 8, but well, winter is long, there is plenty of time, right?

We are hitting another warming trend so all our lovely snow is melting. It is drizzly and miserable outside right now – my least favorite. But thinking up my own list makes me happy to be snug inside today.

  7. A great list, Carole and a timely topic as the cold hit us yesterday. I almost put “Stay in Bed, *nudge nudge* *wink wink*” on my list so I appreciate 10! Sadly, no fireplace here 🙁

  8. I miss a “real” fire. We just push a switch now, sigh. baking cookies sounds GREAT! Now if it would just get cold here in GA.

  9. My neice described Colorado weather as “bipolar”–this is a typical week, 30’s one day and high 50’s the next with icy nighttime temps mostly in the teens. Loved the list and think I’ll Go bake something! Stay warm!

  10. Oh that Pumpkin Ale looks good and I love beer on a cold day! Your list is great and I do miss having a fire here as well!
